Imo State pensioners protest non payment up to 77 months arrears

Pensioners in Imo State, led by the state Chairman, Chief Gideon Ezeji, took to the streets Thursday and blocked both Okigwe road and the entrance to Government House Owerri as they protested the non-payment of their pension.

According to Ezeji; “As at December 2016, the state is owing Imo pensioners between 22 months and 77 months arrears. Our gratuities have remained unpaid since 1998 till date.”
They also described the recent plan by the state government to pay 40 percent of the accumulated arrears only while the pensioners forfeit the remaining 60 percent as callous and inconsiderate.

Reacting to the allegations, Sam Onwuemeodo, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Rochas Okorocha, released a statement stating that those who protested yesterday at the Government House are not pensioners and that the issue of pensions has been resolved.
“The truth of the matter as it concerns the issue of pensions in the state is that more than 99 percent of the pensioners in the state have been paid arrears of their pensions up to December 2016. The remaining one percent are pensioners who were omitted in the first payment exercise and they are at the moment receiving their cheques.” The statement read.
Onwuemeodo also denied claims that 60% of all pensioner’s salary was forfeited, saying that pensioners from grade level one to six were paid their full arrears while those on grade seven to seventeen are the ones who received 40% of their arrears.

Some say its true, others are defending the Nollywood actress.

UNILAG medical student hacks his father to death ...photo

A medical student identified as Olusoji, has been arrested by Ondo State Police Command for allegedly killing his 86-year-old father, High Chief Clifford Olumekun, with an axe.

The suspect allegedly carried out the act at the deceased’s residence at No. 1, Okeraye Street, Idepe in Okitipupa area of Ondo State.

What went wrong? What led a son to such level of 'madness'?

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, said the reason the suspect killed his father had not yet been determined as of Friday as he was still being interrogated.

He told Punch, “The incident happened on January 2, 2017, and we have arrested the suspect. We are still interrogating him to know why he carried out such an act.”

A source said that immediately after killing his father, the suspect allegedly wrapped the deceased’s remains with a cloth and cleaned the blood stains in the room.

Another member of the deceased’s family said the dad was a highly placed chief in the community.

“He is the head of our family and even a kingmaker. He is an Ijama, one of the most senior chiefs in the community. He and the son had been having a running battle over family issues in recent times, but nobody believed that he could resort to killing his father.

“Olusoji is about 26 years old and he is a son of the man’s last wife. He had many wives. Many of our family members believe that he was forced through some diabolical means to kill his father. But I think something triggered the boy. He could have had some mild mental illness we did not know about.

Many times in the past, he had harrased the man to the point that it became an issue in the family. We don’t know whether it was because of money issue or not.”

The Punch learnt that the suspect’s mother and sister, both nurses, were around during the attack.

The mother is also said to be in police custody while the sister has fled. There are accusations that the sister helped the suspect to clean up the blood.

Olusoji was said to have also fled the town immediately after committing the crime.

Another source in the family said, "When the family members got into the room, they noticed the remnants of bloodstains that were hurriedly cleaned on the floor of the room.

“They also found out that bloodstains that were supposed to be on the deceased’s body had been carefully cleaned and his corpse was wrapped in a big cloth.

The source added that the family immediately consulted the oracle to expose the killer but the suspect who had earlier allegedly fled the town showed up and confessed to the crime. He was later handed over to the police.

Olusoji has been detained at the State CID for further investigation.

Looting of Nigeria's $153Million by Madam Diezani

Ex-Petroleum Minister, Diezani Allison Madueke, allegedly diverted $153,310,000 (over N50bn) from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed.

The anti-corruption agency, in a bid to recover the money, applied to the Federal High Court for its temporary forfeiture.

EFCC said the money is stashed in three banks in Nigeria to cover up the fraud.

Justice Muslim Hassan, before whom the application was brought, yesterday ordered the temporary forfeiture of the money.

The banks have been directed to show proof the money was not stolen or risk losing it permanently to the Federal Government.

The three banks allegedly hiding the money are;
Access Bank Plc, First Bank Plc and Fidelity Bank Plc, EFCC said.

The former minister is said to have connived with the bank executives to hide the loot.

EFCC said the banks aided and abetted the massive fraud perpetrated by the minister.

According to the commission, Access Bank is holding $5million out of the total sum.

Sterling Bank has the largest chunk of it, as it is currently hiding N23,446, 300,000 for Mrs Allison-Madueke, EFCC said

The sum of N9,080,000,000 is in First Bank Plc, EFCC added.

How did Mrs Allison-Madueke diverted the money?
EFCC told the court that in December 2014, Diezani invited the former Fidelity Bank MD, Nnamdi Okonkwo, to her office.

There, they allegedly hatched a plan on how $153,310,000 would be moved from NNPC to Okonkwo to be saved for Diezani.

EFCC said Diezani instructed Okonkwo to ensure that the money was not easily traced.

She asked him to guarantee that the money would “neither be credited into any known account nor captured in any transaction platforms” of Fidelity Bank.

The EFCC said Okonkwo accepted and implemented the deal.

The result was the movement of $153,310,000 from NNPC to Fidelity Bank.

EFCC said two former Group Executive Directors of Finance and Account of NNPC, B.O.N. Otti and Stanley Lawson, helped Diezani to move the cash from NNPC, Abuja to the bank’s Lagos headquarters.

The commission said in a desperate bid to conceal the source of the money, Okonkwo instructed the Country Head of Fidelity Bank, Mr. Martin Izuogbe, to take $113,310,000 out of the money to the Executive Director, Commercial and Institutional Bank, Sterling Bank, Lanre Adesanya, to hide.

He said the remaining $40m was taken in cash to the Executive Director, Public Sector Accountant, First Bank, Dauda Lawal.

EFCC said out of the $113,310,000 handed over to Adesanya, $108,310,000 was invested in an off balance sheet investment using Sterling Asset Management Trustees Limited.

The commission said the $108,310,000 was subsequently changed to N23,446, 300,000 and saved in Sterling Bank.

EFCC said it had recovered the N23.4billion in draft and had registered it as an exhibit marked EFCC 01.

It also recovered another $5million out of the money kept with Access Bank Managing Director, Mr. Herbert Wigwe.

The $5million was recovered in draft and had been registered as an exhibit marked EFCC 02.

EFCC said First Bank’s Executive Director, Lawal, had converted the $40million kept with him to N9,080,000,000.

Justice Hassan ordered the temporary forfeiture of all the monies to the Federal Government. He gave Sterling Bank and any other interested party 14 days to appear to prove the legitimacy of the monies.

Should they fail to prove the monies’ source, the money would be permanently forfeited to Federal Government, the judge added.

How killers posing as Okadamen kidnapped & killed this lady ...photo

The string of events that led to the death of 35yrs old Christie Agbulu, a lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, sounded like one made for a scary movie.

But for over one month, the nightmare was real for her family, who waited endlessly with hope that she would be released safely after she was kidnapped in the evening of November 26, 2016.
Information from police investigators offered a look into the investigation that led the police to the kidnappers’ ring leader.
After the suspect was arrested, he subsequently gave the location of where the beautiful lady's lifeless body was found.

That day, Christie Agbulu had just alighted from a bus around 7pm,when an okada rider accosted her, asking where she was going.

She then told him the address that a friend, Levi Shemba, whom she was visiting had given her, indicating that she did not know the place.

The okada rider, who turned out to be one of the members of the syndicate who targeted people who are new to the city, told her to jump on.

“Unknown to her, the okada rider took her to a different location. It was through our investigation that we learnt that the syndicate had been operating as okada riders for a while,” the Public Relations Officer, Kogi State Police Command, Mr. Ovye Williams, said.

The okada rider was said to have taken Agbulu to a forest and demanded a ransom of N150,000, directing the family to pay it in the victim’s bank account. The family then paid N100,000 which her captors later withdrew with her ATM card.

“When we got a report of the kidnap, we entered the bush. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdullahi Chafe, mobilised different units to comb the area. While we were doing that, we were tracking the phone number they were using to communicate with the family.”

For about a month after Agbulu’s kidnap, the police investigation got no breakthrough as the kidnappers changed location frequently in the forest to avoid being pinpointed.

Each time the police identified a location through tracking, the kidnappers would have moved.

It was learnt by Punch that the police eventually got a break in the case. When they tracked Agbulu’s own line, which the kingpin of the syndicate had converted to personal use.

“We tracked the line and eventually located the suspect using it. When he was arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and identified as the gang leader, he then took our men to two other members of the gang.

The suspects are Nuhu Musa (29), Caleb Moses (28) and Sanusi Jibrin (33).
“The suspects confirmed that they belonged to the syndicate that kidnapped people in Lokoja. Anytime a stranger came to the town and did not know the location, they pretended to be okada riders looking for passengers.

“They then led the SARS operatives to where the body of the lecturer was found in a shallow grave along the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway. When the police got there, they realised it had decomposed.

During investigations, the suspects reportedly confessed to have kidnapped a second victim, Grace Ene Onaivi, an Edo State indigene and 300 Level student of the Benue State University.

Onaivi was declared missing on December 23, 2016 by her family members after they could not reach her.

The suspects told the police that they had kidnapped Onaivi exactly the same way Agbulu was abducted with a commercial motorcycle. They also dumped Onaivi’s body in the area where Agbulu’s body was found few days prior.

It is still unclear in what way the victims were killed.

Williams told our correspondent that an autopsy would be conducted on the bodies to determine the cause of death.

The incidents have prompted the police in Kogi State to start a frantic effort to screen okada riders in the state.

The police spokesperson said the command was liaising with the state government to make a customised hat for all the okada riders in the state.

Williams said, “We are also working on a centralised data through which we can trace any of the commercial motorcyclists in the state at any point in time.

“We are also embarking on an awareness campaign that anyone expecting a first-time visitor from outside the state, should ensure the visitor remains in the motor park and pick them there instead.

“We are also informing the people that they should not ever board an okada that has no plate number while okada riders who have not registered should do so immediately. In case of any incident, we would know how to trace them.”

He said investigation was still ongoing on the case as the suspects were cooperating.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at FUAM, where Agbulu worked, Mr. Benigy Anjembe, has described the death of Agbulu as a big loss to the university community as a whole.

“One can only imagine the efforts her family put into training her up to the level where she was on the verge of obtaining her Ph.D.

“Imagine the agony she would have gone through in the hands of her captors before she was killed.”

Anjembe, who spoke with Punch on telephone, said that the only way Agbulu could be honoured was to prosecute the arrested suspects without delay so that justice could be achieved.

He described her as a highly intelligent woman and an epitome of humility, who had no iota of violence in her.

After weeks of silence, Buhari reacts to Southern Kaduna killings, orders 'strong actions'

After weeks of silence, President Muhammadu Buhari has given instructions for decisive measures aimed at bringing an end to the recurring acts of violence and destruction in the Southern part of Kaduna State. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had earlier condemned the President's silence "over the ongoing genocide in Kaduna'.

The General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asaka, said Buhari's silence in the last few weeks "speaks volume over perceived official endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts."
A statement issued on Thursday, by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu said:
"On the directive of President Buhari, the Inspector-General of Police was in the region on Saturday and Sunday to assess the situation at first hand. In addition to the conventional policemen deployed in the area, a squadron of mobile policemen has now been stationed there. The Nigerian army is also in the process of setting up two battalions in Southern Kaduna while the military continues to carry out air surveillance across flash points of the area.
President Buhari has equally directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to carry out a joint assessment of the situation with the sister agency in Kaduna, SEMA, to determine the level of response required for urgent aid to the victims of the violence.
These measures should soon ensure the return of normalcy to the region, while the Kaduna State government continues its peace building efforts. The President commended efforts of the State government and the security agencies in the steps taken so far to curtail the violence.
President Buhari has, once again, sent condolences to the people of Southern Kaduna, who have lost loved ones in the recent violence.
The president also took to twitter. He wrote:

Nigerian drug dealer shot dead as Indonesian police bust Malaysian drug ring ...photo

Indonesian authorities nabbed a Nigerian man, Tanzanian woman and shot dead another man from Nigeria who were reportedly members of a Malaysian-based drug ring as they tried to smuggle marijuana and crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia, an official said on Friday, January 6.
Customs officials at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport had arrested the Tanzanian woman, whose name has not been unannounced as she arrived from Kuala Lumpur in the early hours of Wednesday, January 4th

The officials confiscated 138 grams of crystal meth hidden in 20 capsules and three grams of marijuana tucked into her underpants, and 66 more capsules of crystal meth that she had swallowed.
"We arrested the woman after conducting data screening," Customs and Excise director general Heru Pambudi said, adding that the Tanzanian woman had traveled to Indonesia on her boyfriend's instructions, a Uganda national in Malaysia.
Customs officials later teamed up with police officers to arrest two Nigerian men who were going to receive the drugs from the woman at a restaurant in Central Jakarta. Both men were allegedly part of the Malaysia-based drug ring.
They resisted the police's attempt to arrest them and tried to flee the scene, prompting officers to shoot. One of the men died at the scene. The Indonesian police have reportedly turned their attention to the Malaysian drug ring lately. "Better data and information exchange with the Customs Office has helped us enormously in investigating the Malaysian drug ring,"
National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said. The police and Customs officials have foiled 673 drug smuggling attempts into Indonesia between 2014 and 2017, and seized more than 2,000 kilograms of drugs.
