Lobatan! MTN wants Whatsapp & Viber banned in Nigeria, says they're bad for business

The CEO of MTN Nigeria, Ferdinand Moolman, has stated that the activities of ‘over-the-top’ brands like WhatsApp, Viber have adverse effects on its business and affects the sustainability of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.

Mr. Moolman stated this while highlighting factors affecting Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, at a hearing convened by Senate Committee on Communications.

Yesterday's hearing chaired by vice-chairman of the committee, Adeola Olamilekan, was organised following the now suspended data tariff hike by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.
While identifying factors, Mr. Moolman decried “the depletion of operator revenues by unlicensed providers of “over-the-top” telecoms services who do not have any physical presence; nor pay any taxes; nor make any significant contribution to employment or other socio-economic objectives of government in Nigeria.”

Mentioning WhatsApp, Viber and the likes, the MTN boss pointed out that these companies were eroding gains of Nigeria’s telecom companies and asked Nigeria to take action like the United Arab Emirates did.

According to Mogoon Sub-Location Assistant Chief Josiah Rono,(pictured in the video)  the woman and the suspect – who was working as the deceased’s houseboy, were involved in an illicit affair and had fallen out on the fateful day before the 23-year-old man brandished a panga (machete) and chopped off her head.
Mr Rono said he received a phone call from a member of Nyumba Kumi Security Initiative on Tuesday6pm, informing him of the bloody incident. The woman’s husband, a casual labourer, was away from home at the time of the incident.

Egyptian authorities have arrested doctors, nurses and professors suspected of being involved in an international organ trafficking ring.

The arrests of at least 25 people on Tuesday also included organ buyers and middlemen, the country's Administrative Control Authority said.

Authorities also found "millions of dollars and gold bullion". It is illegal to purchase organs in Egypt, but poverty drives some to sell their body parts.

The Administrative Control Authority, a powerful anti-corruption body, claimed the network targeted on Tuesday was "made up of Egyptians and Arabs taking advantage of some of the citizens' difficult economic conditions so that they buy their human organs and sell [them] for large sums of money".

A Landlord testifies Ibadan Lawyer actually stabbed husband ...photo

The owner of the house where a lawyer, Yewande Oyediran, was alleged to have killed her husband, Adelowo Oyediran, on Tuesday told the Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan that the suspect stabbed her husband during an argument.

Three witnesses were presented by the prosecution at the resumed hearing, including Chief Akinpelu Adelodun, who was the couple’s landlord in Ibadan.

Adelodun told Justice Muktar Abimbola that he was at the apartment of the couple when the argument became ugly and that he made an attempt to calm them down. He said Yewande insisted that she would injure her husband.

The landlord told the court that the misunderstanding continued till around 3am and that at a point, Yewande became calm.

He said he was, however, surprised to hear a noise around 6am same day.

Earlier, Adelodun said a cheque issued in his name as transport fare to appear in court should be returned.

Adelodun was alleged to have requested his transport fare before he would appear in court, but he denied the allegation, saying that he did not instruct anyone to make the demand on his behalf.

The landlord is among those listed to testify against her.

Bolivians jubilate in Court after getting lesser sentences for drugs in Nigeria ...photo

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced three Bolivians to six years’ imprisonment for dealing in illicit drugs.

The convicts are Reuben Jorge, Yhugo Moreno and Yerko Dorado.

They were sentenced by Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, who affirmed their guilty plea to the two counts pressed against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The convicts had been in detention since February 3, 2013, when they were arrested by operatives of the NDLEA on Daily Times Estate, Satellite Town, Lagos State, the base where they illegally produced Ephedrine and Methamphetamine.

The convicts were said to have been housed by their Nigerian accomplices between November 2011, and February 2012, before they were caught.

The NDLEA had told the judge that the foreigners violated Section 22 (a) of the NDLEA Act and were liable to be jailed for life or imprisoned for not less than 25 years.

But in her judgment on Tuesday, Justice Oguntoyinbo said what the law prescribed was a maximum of 25 years, but that a judge could, based on his discretion, impose a lesser jail term.

She therefore sentenced the convicts to six years on each count. She said the sentence would run concurrently and would start from February 3, 2013, when they were arrested.

Justice Oguntoyinbo said, “It is, therefore, in the light of Section 22 (a) and Section 12 of the NDLEA Act, that these three defendants, having been found guilty and convicted of the offences alleged in counts one and two of the charge (sheet) dated the 18th day of February, 2013, are now sentenced on count one to a period of six prison years and on count two to a prison period of six years.

“Both sentences shall run concurrently and shall be calculated from the date the defendants were first arrested, which is the 3rd day of February, 2013.

“The defendants have benefited from the commitment of their counsel. Both defendants and the NDLEA have a right of appeal.”

Following the judgment, the three convicted foreigners jubilated outside the courtroom where they hugged one another and posed for a snapshot by our correspondent.

The convicted foreigners were first arraigned on March 23, 2013, before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the same court, where they earlier pleaded not guilty to the initial six counts pressed against them by the NDLEA.

Following their not guilty plea, Justice Buba admitted them to bail in the sum of N50m each with two sureties in like sum.

The judge said one of the sureties must be an owner of a landed property in Lagos valued at not less than N10m, while the other must be a Bolivian with resident permit in Nigeria.

The foreigners were equally ordered to report weekly and sign an attendance register at the office of the NDLEA, to show that they were still in Nigeria.

They were mandated to sign and file an undertaking that they would not delay trial.

In spite of the bail, the foreigners remained in detention as they found it difficult to perfect the bail terms

Oyo dismisses 662 Civil Servants over fake WAEC results

The Oyo State Government on Tuesday said 662 civil servants had been dismissed from the state public service for forging the West African Examination Council’s certificates.

The state government added that 2,021 fictitious names of workers and pensioners had been removed from its payroll.

The state Head of Service, Mr. Soji Eniade, made the disclosure while briefing the press on the decisions made at the State Executive Council meeting which was held on Monday.

Also at the briefing were the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun, and the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Bashir Olanrewaju.

Eniade said about 684 workers were not found at their duty posts during the last physical verification in the state.

He explained that the state government was restructuring the state public service by ascertaining the quality and quantity of the workforce.

Giving a breakdown of the number of ghost workers in the state, Eniade said there were 1,432 fictitious pensioners’ names, 84 fictitious local governments’ pensioners and 505 fictitious workers in the state civil and public service.

The HoS said they were uncovered during the verification whereby the Bank Verification Number was used to determine the accurate size of the state workforce and pensioners.

He said, “The state government discovered that 662 personnel on its payroll were in possession of forged WAEC certificates which were discovered during the certificate verification handled by Messrs Captain Consulting. Three hundred and five of the personnel were from the local government councils, 152 from various ministries, 149 from the Teaching Service Commission, 28 from parastatals and two from the state Universal Basic Education Board.

“There were 670 workers that were discovered to have submitted forged certificates, eight out of them re-submitted their WAEC certificates for re-verification while the remaining 662 had been summarily dismissed and the onus is now on them to prove that the WAEC certificates in their possession are original.”

Eniade further explained that the exercise was a continuous one as the consultant was expected to extend the verification to the higher institution’s certificates submitted by the state civil and public servants.

He urged workers with fake certificates to voluntarily resign as the government would come after them.

“The level of decadence in the system is embarrassing and this cannot continue. What the government is doing is called self-check. There is financial check, institutional check, quality check and so on. Any organisation or even individual that wants to progress must engage in self-check as standard practice.”

Man accused of grooming 11 yr old boy on Facebook kills himself during trial ...photo

A man accused of grooming an 11-year-old boy and sending him indecent images of children has killed himself during his trial .

James Strike, 46, stood accused of charges related to indecent images charges between June 2009 and June 2016.

He was also charged with threatening or abusive behaviour towards the schoolboy via Facebook between February and March 2014 by threatening him with violence.

But the wheelchair bound man, from Springburn, Glasgow, committed suicide before his trial was over, reports the Daily Record .

His alleged victim, now 14, claimed he received messages from a person called Steven Ferris.

He was sent threats "I'm coming for you" and "I'm your judge and jury and you're f****** guilty".

But before the jury were asked to make a decision, the trial came to a halt after Strike took his own life.

Sheriff Martin Jones QC told jurors at Glasgow Sheriff Court of his death and formally brought proceedings to an end.

During the trial the court heard the teenager received a number of messages from a Facebook account called Steven Ferris.

The court heard the boy was threatened with violence that the person told him "I'm coming for you, see you soon".

Others messages including "talk to me now before I turn on you" were sent.

As well as "I might be outside with my boys waiting for you".

The court heard the youngster from South Yorkshire was probed about his sexuality and that the messages were sent all times of the day and night.

The boy's terrified mother described "feeling sick" when she found the string of threats from the Facebook account.

She told the court "I felt like a failure as a parent”.

Her son was also sent indecent images of children on the social media site.

A cyber crime expert who analysed Strike's laptop told the court of repeated access to a website known to her to contain indecent images of children.

Agreed evidence read to the jury included that the laptop had logged into the Facebook site with the name Steven Ferris and visited the teenager's page on numerous occasions.

And, the images sent to the schoolboy were also on the device.

The court heard evidence that Strike confessed to a doctor that he "had done it" and was sorry for what he put his family through.

Jurors heard he admitted having a sexual interest in children and felt compelled to view images then retracted what he said days later.

Strike continued to deny the charges when he went on trial.

A Ghana returnee goes berserk, injures many and kills one ...photo

A Nigerian residing in Ghana, who recently relocated to his hometown of Oreropke, Delta State, Monday, went berserk, stabbing a bricklayer identified as Daniel to death, while an unspecified number of persons sustained various degrees of injuries from the attack.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, Benjamin Dieseru, had travelled to Ghana in August and was brought back to Nigeria by his father, Mr. Chase Dieseru, following complaints that his son was mentally challenged.

“There is tension in the town over fears of a reprisal attack from the family of the bricklayer, who are threatening vengeance,” an eyewitness told Vanguard on phone.

Speaking further, the source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “One of those he stabbed has been referred to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSU, Oghara, owing to the gravity of his injuries, while others are receiving medical attention here at Oreropke.”

Though details of the incident were still sketchy, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, promised to get back with more details on the incident, but had not done so at press time.

Politician banned from active politics for 3 years over his failure to declare his assets by CCT ...photo

Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, has placed a 3 year ban on active politics on Ubong Joshua Etukudo, an ex- supervisory councillor of Ibesiko local government area, over his failure to submit his asset declaration form within the stipulated time.

Delivering judgment in a petition before it yesterday, the tribunal chairman, Danladi Yakubu Umar, (pictured above) said Etukudo is banned from participating in neither elective or selective political office. He ruled that the prosecution counsel proved his case beyond reasonable doubt, and that he was guilty of the offence as charged.

“The defendant having conceded to all what was said against him in the charge, that was truth by the witness from Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), the tribunal had no option than to summarily convict the defendant for the said charge and handed over the punishment of banning him not to be appointed to any position as public officer for the period of three years, both appointive and elective position,” he said.

Tragic! Mother and daughter killed at a pedestrian crossing by driver who ignored traffic light ...photo

A lorry driver, Neville Fletcher, ignored a red light at a pedestrian crossing, leading to the death of a mother-of-two and her daughter. A CCTV camera on the street captured Mr. Fletcher as he ran into 43-year-old Zena Jackson and her six-year-old daughter, Cidalia, near Stanley Street in Spring Bank, Hull, UK.

When Fletcher arrived before the Hull Magistrate Court, the presiding Judge, Jeremy Richardson QC, said that no sentence imposed on the offender can make up for the loss the family has suffered. Fletcher’s lawyer pleaded on his client’s behalf saying that he has been a decent man all his life and that Fletcher does not understand how he ran the red light. The 55-year-old is said to be both devastated and remorseful.

Speaking about her mother, Sadie, the surviving child of the deceased said, "She had a brilliant sense of humour and used to laugh and joke all the time. She was just funny. When you did something bad, she was a real mum, but when you were good, she was like a friend. She loved being a mum, but she was like a kid herself sometimes. I'm going to really miss her."
Sadie also spoke about her sister, Cidalia, in flowery terms, saying; "Cidalia had a great imagination and we only learnt after she died that she had won a writing competition. The story was about a mermaid."

The lorry driver admitted to two counts of causing death by careless driving. He has been jailed for 14 months and banned from driving for five years and seven months.
