Tragic...fire kills six children at South African Orphanage...

A pre-dawn blaze killed eight people, mostly children, at an orphanage in the South African coastal city of Durban on Thursday, emergency services said. Six of the victims were children, with the youngest just eight years old. “We responded to the fire at about 2.20am (0020 GMT) this morning,” emergency services spokesman Robert McKenzie told AFP.
“Four more people were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from serious to mild. None were in a critical condition.” The fire tore through the boys’ section of the orphanage and all those who died were males aged between eight and 21. The blaze was extinguished about four hours later and the cause is being investigated.  In February 2010, a fire killed 13 children and two adults at another orphanage in the same province of KwaZulu-Natal in the southeast of the country.
That August, 22 elderly people died in a fire at a retirement home in Nigel on the southeastern outskirts of Johannesburg. The following year in June, 12 residents of a home for the mentally disabled in the town of Springs east of Johannesburg were killed in an overnight fire.

A Nigerian is said to be executed on death-row in Indonesia...(photo)

Indonesia plans to put 16 death-row convicts to death this year, including a Nigerian and a Zimbabwean, Attorney-General H.M. Presetyo said on Wednesday. Asked if there were any foreigners among the convicts to be executed, Prasetyo told reporters: "We have foreigners, among them from Nigeria and Zimbabwe." he said.
Mr. Prasetyo also disclosed that no convicts from the United States, Europe or Australia were on the list to be executed. A 59-year-old British woman, Lindsay Sandiford, was sentenced to death after being convicted in 2013 of trying to smuggle cocaine worth $2.5 million into the country.

A Philippine maid, Mary Jane Veloso, got a last-minute reprieve last year in response to a request from Manila after an employment recruiter, whom Ms. Veloso had accused of planting drugs in her luggage, gave herself up to police in the Philippines.

The death row convicts will be executed "immediately after" the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Mr Mohammad Rum, a spokesman for the attorney-general's office, told AFP, last month but he did not give a precise date.

Mr Rum did not say who would face the firing squad, but Indonesia has been waging a campaign against narcotics and in 2015 executed 14 drug convicts, mostly foreigners, sparking international outrage.

Redeemed preacher
THE gruesome killing of a female evangelist, Eunice Elisha, in Abuja on Saturday is the latest episode in an ongoing escalation of sectarian hatred in Nigeria.
It raises real fears that Islamist fanatics and their sponsors are spreading their murderous tentacles from the Northern states to the Federal Capital Territory. Their jihad is made easier because successive governments have abdicated their responsibility to make every part of the country safe for Nigerians of all faiths or punish offenders.
