Fake ASP forges police documents, recruitment forms

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a fake Assistant Superintendent of Police, Abdulrasak Sani.
The 32-year-old was alleged to have forged the police letterheads, identity card and recruitment forms, which he gave to members of the public.
The suspect, who claimed to be attached to the Office of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, was also issuing out permits to tankers conveying petroleum products from Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Lagos.
He was said to have escorted a truck to a filling station in Lagos when he was arrested by the police.
It was learnt that Sani was formerly a constable, but was dismissed in 2006 after engaging in illegal oil bunkering.
The suspect told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, that his friend in the police assisted him to produce the fake documents after he could not get another job for 10 years.
He said, “I was formerly a constable, but the authorities dismissed me in 2006 after I was involved in illegal oil bunkering. Since that time, I had been out of job and my mother had been the one feeding me and my three children.
“When I could no longer bear it, I contacted my friend, Sergeant Adamu Hassan, who is attached to the Trinity Police Division, Apapa. He was the one that produced the ID card, recruitment forms and letterheads. I started using them to make money.
“I am based in Eleme, Port Harcourt. My clients, who already have my phone number, usually call me for business. I collect N60,000 to escort a tanker from Port Harcourt to Lagos. When I get to Lagos, I meet with my friend, Hassan. I have paid him a total of N150,000 for his efforts.
“I have done this business for one month and escorted six trucks.”
The suspect, who said he was arrested while escorting another truck to Lagos, said the police got wind of his activities and sent operatives to waylay him.
He said he regretted his actions and begged for forgiveness.
The police also paraded a Kogi State indigene, Nathaniel Benjamin, for illicit use of police uniform without being a member of the Force.
Nathaniel was alleged to have taken over his late younger brother police uniform and was using same to get free ride in public buses.
But the suspect told PUNCH Metro he had not done anything wrong, insisting that he only used the uniform for free transport while looking for employment.
He said, “My brother, Samuel, who died in a motor accident, owned the uniform. He was a constable in Niger State before his untimely death. When I lost my job as a bank security guard in January and I didn’t get another job for two months, I decided to start wearing the uniform.
“I was only using it for free transport. When the police accosted me for using the uniform, I told them I had not committed any crime. I didn’t run away. I am not a criminal.”
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni, advised members of the public to be wary of impersonators, adding that the command would go after people who gave the Force a bad name.

Abuja landlord accuses tenant of abducting 16- year-old daughter

A landlord, Alex Osuji, has accused his tenant, Cornelius Ubara, of abducting his daughter, Precious, in the Kapwa, Federal Housing Estate, Lugbe, Abuja.
Alex told PUNCH Metro that he left 16-year-old Precious at home for a banking transaction on November 13, 2015 – the day of the incident.
He said when he returned home, his wife told him their daughter had gone missing.
Alex said they called Precious’ mobile line, but it was switched off, adding that nobody could offer any clue about her whereabouts.
He said their neighbour, Ubara, who was around when he left the house, denied seeing her that day.
He said, “However, around 8.20pm, messages started coming from Precious’ line into my phone and that of my wife. One of the messages read, ‘I am sorry daddy. I will miss you and mummy. I cannot face this shame. I am pregnant for my friend. I am sorry I have to travel out to avoid embarrassment, thank you’.”
“Another one sent to her friend, read, ‘My good friend; I just have to tell you this at the wrong time. Please keep it to yourself. I am not a virgin as you thought. I am ashamed of myself. The guy that is taking me for lesson impregnated me. He has given me money to go and stay with his aunt somewhere.’ ”
The couple said they did not believe that their daughter fled the house because of pregnancy as she had her menses only two weeks to her disappearance.
The matter was later reported at a police station.
Alex said, “Initially, I had no suspect, but the following day, which was Saturday, a neighbour, Ajia, told my wife that Precious bought two bottles of soft drink from her the day she went missing. She said one of them was for Ubara, my next-door neighbour.
“When Ajia confronted Ubara, he could not deny it.”
Alex said the empty bottles of the soft drinks bought by Precious were found in Ubara’s living room, adding that his neighbour might know about his daughter’s whereabouts.
“If my daughter had left the house on her own volition, she would have taken her clothes. She did not even take her purse. It was only her phone that was not in the house,” he added.
The police were said to have arrested Ubara and Precious’ lesson teacher, Mr. Samuel Nnaji, as well as Christian Eboh, the owner of a business centre where Precious worked.
They were all reportedly released after two days.
It was learnt that the matter was later referred to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command Headquarters in Garki, where a deputy commissioner of police reportedly said the text messages sent from Precious’ phone to her parents were sent by her captors to divert attention.
Before Precious got missing on November 13, 2015, she was scheduled to sit for English Language in the National Examination Council’s Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination the following day.
The police were said to have informed the family that she did not sit for the paper.
It was learnt that the Investigating Police Officer at the command headquarters threatened to abandon the case because she was not paid.
Alex said, “She asked me to give her N30,000 for mobilisation or she would abandon the case. I could not give that to her. However, I eventually had to part with N10,000 and she said I still needed to give her N10,000 later. I also gave her N2,000 for case jacket.
“Two weeks after the incident, Ubara started packing out of my house. I called the police to report that the suspect was packing out. They said I should allow him to pack. I do not know where he packed to.”
Attempts to speak with Ubara proved abortive as his mobile phone was switched off. A text message sent to the line was also not replied to.
Attempts to speak with Precious’ lesson teacher also proved abortive as the line could not be reached.
However, when our correspondent visited Precious’ former employer, Eboh, 30, he confirmed that he was arrested and later released on bail, but added that he had no hand in Precious’ disappearance.
When our correspondent called the Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command Headquarters, Mr. Anjuguri Manz, he said the case was under investigation.

‘I was under spell when I killed my lover’

Thirty-six-year-old David Ogundele, who allegedly killed his lover, Miss Tosin Ashinwo, 27, has said he was under a spell when he killed Ashinwo and stabbed her 65-year-old mother, Abiola.
Speaking while being paraded along with other suspects by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Okaula, in Ilorin on Wednesday, the suspect said he had been married to his wife, Ronke, for about seven years without a child.
Ogundele, who is a worker with Landmark University Secondary School, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, added that Ronke, on hearing of his relationship with Ashinwo, threatened to deal with him.
He said, “I have been married for about seven years without any child from my wife, Ronke. After people saw me with Ashinwo, they told my wife stories that were false. That made her (Ronke) to get annoyed and she threatened to deal with me. It was after I stabbed Ashinwo and I saw her collapsing that my eyes became clear.
“We were very close. We met last year November and things had been going on fine with us. I do not know what made me to kill her. We were friends. She loved me and I loved her as well. I don’t know what came over me.”
The CP said on April 25 at about 8am, Ogundele allegedly murdered Oshinwo, who was a worker with MTN.
He said the suspect claimed that she refused his marriage proposal and went further to stab her mother.
The CP stated that the command in its determination to arrest the culprit, set up an intelligence-based unit which arrested him on May 13 at Oba-Ile in Osun State.
He also paraded an alleged notorious gang leader, Olatunji Ibrahim aka Ariyo.
The  Kwara State Police Command had in 2015 declared Ibrahim wanted and offered a reward of N50m to any person with useful information that could lead to his arrest.
Okaula said Ibrahim had in 2015 led members of his gang to unleash terror on Agbarere, Ita-Ajia, Idi-Ape, and other areas in Ilorin by allegedly killing residents and setting hundreds of houses ablaze.
He added that the gang also damaged 50 vehicles after which Ibrahim escaped and went underground.
“The determination and the doggedness of the command and the need to make him answer for all his criminal activities led to the setting up of a special investigation team with a sole mandate of apprehending him.
“The effort paid off as Ibrahim and other members of his gang: Lukman Oladimeji, aka Zanda, and Akeem Olayinka, aka Student, were eventually traced to their hide out,” the CP said.
He also said the command arrested Moe Anjorin, 34, for alleged involvement in rape, robbery and unlawful possession of arms.
He stated that the police recovered three locally-made pistols, one axe, eight live ammunition, one live cartridge, charms and a knife from the suspect.
Okaula said the command on May 29 arrested seven suspected cultists at the Oka-Onigbin and Oko areas of the state.
He stated that three of the suspects had confessed to being strong members of the KKK Confraternity, adding that their activities included maiming and robbing in Oke-Onigbin and its environs.
He added that an axe, cutlasses and charms were recovered as exhibits from the suspects.
The CP said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

She said, “The woman was arrested on Koleade Street, Council bus stop in the Idimu area. She was arrested around 1pm on Wednesday. She has confessed to the abduction. She told the police that she wanted to make  Fehintola her own child.
“Another child was found in her apartment. Some other suspects were picked up along with the woman. The police did a good job. The family members are happy.”
Our correspondent learnt that the police were perfecting preparations to release Fehintola to her family members.

“Applicants will be grouped according to their local government areas and a date fixed for their screening.”
The chairman said the steps taken were aimed at avoiding overcrowding at the venue and ensuring a meticulous exercise.
He warned that no applicant would be admitted into any venue or appear on any date other than those allocated to him or her.
Okiro added that after the screening, successful candidates would be invited to a zonal screening to be held in the 12 police zonal headquarters in the country.
He said the national interview would be held in Abuja for those who were successful at the zonal screening.
He noted that the Commission had been transparent since the filling and submission of forms started, saying “I want to re-emphasis that the Commission will be guided by the rules and will be fair, transparent and ensure that the process is merit-driven.
“As a commission, we have collectively and individually swore to make this project a huge success.
“The Nigeria Police needs the best, especially now that the nation is engaged in several battles.”
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of training, Mr. Femi Adenaike, said all training schools and colleges were rehabilitated.

N4bn campaign funds: EFCC freezes Udenwa, Onwuliri’s accounts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has frozen two bank accounts jointly owned by a former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa; and a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri.
It was learnt that the accounts were frozen as part of investigation into the N4bn disbursed by the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.
The money, which was disbursed by the Director of Finance of the campaign organisation, Senator Nenadi Usman, was alleged to have emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
A source at the anti-graft agency stated that “Udenwa and Onwuliri got N350m in two tranches. The first tranche of N150m was paid into their joint account with Zenith Bank on January 13, 2015.
“The second tranche of N200m was credited into their account with Diamond Bank.”
Others who allegedly received part of the fund include a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who admitted to receiving N840m through his Zenith Bank account with number 1004735721.
He is currently in the custody of the EFCC while the account has since been frozen.
When contacted on the telephone, however, Udenwa said he was not aware if the account had been frozen or not since he was no longer using it.
“Has it been frozen? I don’t know. When they quizzed me a few weeks ago, I told them that the account was opened solely for the purpose of receiving campaign funds and we are no longer using the account,” he said.
