I was sexually abused, says Rita Edochie

Popular Nollywood actress, Mrs Rita Edochie said she was a victim of sexual abuse many years ago and called on parents to regularly communicate with their children.
Edochie revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.
Edochie, who was a guest at a seminar to end violence against children, told NAN that she was sexually violated at a young age by a family friend.
She said, “I was a victim of sexual abuse, that was when I was in primary six, I was going to the hospital and somebody called me.
“The boy used some diabolic means and sexually violated me, when I could not see my period, I refused to tell my mother, because she was very strict.
“I love sharing my experience because at the end of the day I succeeded, If I had not succeed, I would not have been able to be saying it.”
She explained that the pregnancy was about seven months before her mother noticed it.
Edochie added that her mother was shocked at the pregnancy because she thought her being strict would not allow such a thing to happen.
“My mother asked how it happened and I told her everything; my brother picked a knife and wanted to kill me, but my mother stopped him.
“It happened that the mother of the boy that violated me was my mother’s friend; the boy’s mother was surprised but the boy denied.
“My mother took me to hospital to abort the pregnancy with a plan of taking me to my grandmother’s place at ‘Ogede’ to stay for one week before returning home.
“I told her I may lose my life in the process and because she loved me, she then aborted the planned abortion; I feel it was God that spoke through me.
According to the actress, her mother took care of the baby while she went to school, otherwise she wouldn’t have been where she was today, she explained.
The veteran actress called on parents to communicate regularly with their children and make them their best friends.
“Parents should always listen to their children’s complaints on happenings both in and outside the home.’’

Co-tenants flee slain driver’s house over fear of arrest

Co-tenants of Muyiwa Ijaduola, a commercial driver allegedly pushed to death by a policewoman in the Igando area of Lagos State, have fled the house.
PUNCH Metro gathered on Tuesday that the co-tenants abandoned the house after they learnt that the police arrested and tortured the deceased’s siblings and would be coming for them too.
This is just as the eldest brother of the deceased, Ayodele Ijaduola, told our correspondent that Muyiwa or any member of the family did not have epilepsy, saying anybody could go to the family house in Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State, to ascertain his claim.
PUNCH Metro had reported on Tuesday that residents blocked the Igando end of the Lagos State University-Iyana Iba Road to protest against the alleged killing of 46-year-old Muyiwa by a policewoman, identified as Corporal Taiwo.
It was gathered that Muyiwa, a father of three, was stopped by Taiwo, who allegedly demanded N500 from him, pushing the driver into a gutter when the man said he had only N300.
Muyiwa was said to have hit his head against the edge of the gutter and died, after which Taiwo and her unidentified colleague fled the scene.
When PUNCH Metro visited Muyiwa’s house on Alhaji Noah Street, Egan, Igando, on Tuesday, the apartment was deserted.
A resident, who begged not to be named, told our correspondent that the co-tenants fled the house on Monday after they learnt that the Igando Police Division arrested and allegedly beat up Muyiwa’s younger brothers – Ayodeji, Tolulope and his wife, Zainab – for about four hours, adding that there was speculation that the policemen would come for them.
She said, “It is only Muyiwa who stayed here. His wife and three children live in Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State. He usually visited them once in a while. Since Monday, the co-tenants fled the house. Even Muyiwa family members have fled for now.
“They said policemen from Igando were coming to raid the house and harass people in order to sweep the matter under the carpet. After they arrested the deceased’s brothers on Monday, everyone fled.”
Muyiwa’s eldest brother, Ayodele Ijaduola, told PUNCH Metro on the telephone that the police’s claim that the deceased had an epileptic attack was false.
He said, “The epilepsy claim by the police is not true. Muyiwa did not have any epilepsy. We do not have epilepsy in our family. The police are free to go to our family house in Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State, to verify that.  We are ready to have the autopsy conducted to know the truth. He did not die because of any epilepsy. Up till now, we have not seen his corpse.”
Also, Pastor Matthew Abisoye, the pastor-in-charge of Healing Power Gospel Church, where Muyiwa worshipped, said the deceased was once his driver and he had never seen any trace of epilepsy in him.
He said, “Muyiwa attended the Healing Power Gospel Church. He was an active member of my church. In fact, he was once my personal driver. I have never seen or heard anything like epilepsy about him. I call on the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, to investigate this incident to the fullest.”
One of Muyiwa’s siblings detained at the police station on Monday, Tolulope, said the police locked them up on the claim that they instigated the protest.
He said, “The three of us were beaten by policemen at the division. They said we were the ones who instigated the residents to protest. They locked us up in the cell. We were freed around 5pm at the Area M Command, Idimu. My body is still very weak.
“We spent about four hours in their cell before they moved us to the area command. Our offence was that we started the protest and demanded to see the corpse of Muyiwa.”
The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Damasus Ozoani, said a post-mortem examination would reveal the cause of Muyiwa’s death, adding that the police would not withhold the corpse for no just reason.
He said, “It was said that he died from a suspected epileptic attack. The police are not medical personnel. It is the post-mortem examination that will reveal the cause of death and that is what the police are waiting for.
“The corpse will be released to the family members as soon as the examination is done. We are hastening up the process and I assure you that anyone found culpable will be dealt with. Investigation is ongoing into the matter.”

DEVILISH: Grandmother, stepmother arrested for removing toddler’s eye, tongue

A two-year-old boy, Musa Murtala, is currently battling to live at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano.
The victim, who had been admitted since Friday, was allegedly tortured by his grandmother, Hafsatu, and stepmother, Zainab, at their home in Gulu town in the Rimin Gado Local Government Area of the state.
Our correspondent gathered that the two suspects allegedly broke the legs and arms of Musa, cut his tongue, removed his eye and private parts.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Nura Idris, toldPUNCH Metro on Tuesday that it would take some weeks for the victim to recover, adding that he had deep cuts in different parts of his body.
The victim’s father was said to have reported the incident to the Kano State Police Command, which immediately sent men to arrest the suspects, after which the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Our correspondent gathered that Musa’s mother left his father after a disagreement which culminated in a divorce.
The mother was said to have handed him over to his father, who then put Musa in the care of  his grandmother and stepmother.
The duo was alleged to have tortured him for reasons yet to be ascertained.
The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Magaji, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspects were in custody.
He said, “It happened on Friday. The boy’s father came back from work late and when he saw what had happened to the child, he reported to the police.
“He said he divorced the boy’s mother and handed him over to his mother and second wife. He said it was on Friday that he discovered what both his wife and mother had done to his son.
“We took him to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital. His legs and arms were broken; there was a deep cut on his private parts, he was also not seeing with one eye.
“Because he is a toddler, there is no way we can ask him what happened.”
Magaji said in the course of interrogation, the two suspects denied being responsible for the injuries, adding that they also denied torturing him.
He, however, said the matter was under investigations and the police would get to the roots of the case.
It was learnt that upon the directive of the state Police Commissioner, Abbati Dikko, the case had been transferred to the SCID for further investigation.
The CMD, Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Idris, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said Musa was admitted in the children wing of the female orthopaedic ward.
He said the two-year-old was taken into the theatre for operation on Monday, adding that it could take weeks for him to recover from the injuries which were inflicted with a sharp object.
He said, “His tongue, one of his eyes and a part of his private parts were cut. He had fractures of the humerus (upper limbs) and femura (lower limbs). There were lacerations here and there in his body. From the nature of the injuries, those behind the crime used a very sharp object, which could be a blade or knife.
“He had surgeries yesterday (Monday). We did some repairs on him and he’s doing well now. He is a child and his bones are still growing. Fractures for a child will not take long to heal. I am sure in a couple of weeks, he should be okay.”
The wife of the police commissioner, who is also the Chairperson of the Police Officers Wives’ Association Against Child Abuse, Hajiya Dikko, had reportedly intervened in the case and promised that her group would follow the case to a logical end.

FG discovers 43,000 ghost workers, saves N50bn

The Head of the Continuous Audit team of the Federal Government, Mr Mohammed Dikwa, on Tuesday said N50 billion was saved so far through the audit of security agencies payroll. Dikwa said this in Abuja at a meeting between the Continuous Audit team, Minister of Finance and Heads of Para-Military agencies to discuss ways to clean up the payroll of the security agencies. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that President Mohammadu Buhari had set up the Continuous Audit team to look into the payroll of all Federal Government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The team had already embarked on the audit of the Military payroll and enrolling them on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). “Since we started the continuous audit programme, we have saved about N50 billion and over 43,000 ghost workers have been removed from the payroll of the federal government. “And as we go on, we are very sure that we will continue to reduce the cost of federal government payroll. “Please note the cost is not related to ghost workers alone but with allowances which we believe have to be trimmed down so that we can manage the cost of governance,’’ he said. Dikwa said that the officers from the account departments of all the para-militray agencies were currently undergoing training on IPPIS and the Government Management Information System (GIFMIS) He said the plan was to have all the agencies enrolled on the IPPIS and GIFMIS at the end of the month once the training was completed. Similarly, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, said the audit of the para-military payroll would focus mainly on non-regular allowances of security officers. She said initial investigations had revealed that these allowances had created avenues for unscrupulous persons within the system to steal money. “The president has given the directive that all ministries and agencies of the Federal Government be enrolled on the IPPIS latest December, 2016. “This meeting is to discuss the modalities of how this will be achieved; specifically, there are number of allowances described as the non-regular allowances. “We have to make sure that these non-regular allowances are paid directly to those who are serving. And the best way to do that is through an automated system. “This system will be linked to BVN so the money is going to specific individuals rather than being diverted elsewhere. “Whoever is paid irregular allowances for hazard, risk or other extraneous factors, it is important that the money gets to them. “The people taking the risk should be paid, otherwise the service they are expected to render will be in jeopardy,’’ she said. Adeosun said that one of the advantages of the IPPIS was that delays in payment of salaries and allowances of security personnel would be a thing of the past. She reassured members that the details gathered through the IPPIS would be kept safe so that identities of security operatives would not be compromised. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Mr Bassey Akpanyung, pledged the ministry’s support to ensure that all the security agencies under its control complied for the success of the process. NAN reports that heads of Customs, Immigration, Prisons, Police, Fire Service and Civil Defence were present at the meeting.

419: Alleged land scammer gets N10m bail

ABUJA – Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court Abuja, yesterday, granted bail in the sum of N10 million to one Victor Ochala who is standing trial on a 27-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence and forgery to the tune of over N300million. Ochala is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The trial judge also ordered the defendant to provide two sureties in like sum. He stressed that one of the sureties must have a landed property in Abuja or its environs worth N10m. According to the court, the second surety must be a civil servant not below grade level 08. The sureties are to submit their recent passport photographs to the court, even as the defendant was also ordered to surrender his international passport to the court. Ochola, allegedly, in connivance with one Dayo Jimo (now at large) fraudulently defrauded one Mohammed Jubril, under the pretext of purchasing some plots of land for the victim. One of the counts in the charge against him read: “That you Victor Ochola, Dayo Jimoh (now at large) and others still at large sometime in January, 2014 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did conspire among themselves to commit an unlawful act to wit: obtaining money by false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8(a) and punishable under Section 1(3) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.” He was admitted to bail after two failed attempts by his lawyer, Mr. P. O. Okolo, SAN, to secure his bail. Moving his bail application, Okolo pleaded that, “the defendant needs access to his lawyers for the preparation of his defence”. He also urged the court to admit the defendant to bail to enable him attend to his “worsening health conditions”. Victor Ukagwu, counsel to EFCC, opposed the application on the ground that the facts deposed to in his affidavit had already been canvassed in the previous applications that was refused. Meantime, Justice Mohammed has fixed June 22 for continuation of the trial.

Hahahah: You can’t travel abroad for medical treatment, Court tells Metuh

Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja ‎has rejected an application for leave to travel abroad for medical treatment filed by Olisa Metuh, former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ‎Abang ruled that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain Metuh’s application because there was a subsisting order directing Metuh to deposit his international passport with the chief registrar of the high court as part of his bail conditions. He added that Metuh through his counsel did not apply to vary the bail conditions. “This is not a case of sympathy, but a case of law.‎ This court has no jurisdiction to entertain this application,” “The court is not Father Christmas to give to the defendant what it did not ask for” “The application lacks merit. It is accordingly dismissed. The court cannot set aside its decision.”

US Poll: Protesters hurl rocks as Trump wins Washington primary

Trump Protesters opposed to Donald Trump hurled rocks and bottles outside a Trump rally in New Mexico on Tuesday, the same day the bombastic billionaire won the Republican presidential primary in Washington state. The primary victory brings Trump, the last Republican standing in the 2016 US presidential race, one major step closer toward clinching his party’s nomination. But the success was clouded by violent anti-Trump demonstrations in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Chaos erupted outside a Trump rally when protesters threw burning t-shirts and bottles at police, and tried to storm the convention center where the provocative Republican candidate was speaking. Trump Horse-mounted police and officers wielding clubs used pepper spray and smoke bombs to try to disperse the crowd. The protesters, several of whom waved Mexican flags, chanted expletives about Trump. Some also waved signs with expletive-laden anti-Trump slogans in Spanish. Trump has proposed building a wall on the Mexican border, suggested that Mexican immigrants were rapists and drug dealers, and urged the deportation of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. “Protestors are now throwing bottles and rocks at our Police Horses,” Albuquerque police tweeted. The southwestern US state has highest percentage of Hispanic residents – nearly 50 percent – of any other state, and polls show that Hispanics overwhelmingly oppose Trump’s immigration proposals. Trump addressed a rally of about 4,000 people earlier Tuesday evening, but was frequently interrupted by protesters, the Albuquerque Journal reported. Police managed to stop a group of about 100 protesters who had tried to storm the convention center when Trump was speaking, the newspaper said. Riot police were deployed soon after. Several Trump rallies have drawn protests, including in Chicago in March when his supporters clashed with protesters. Trump has been criticized for inciting violence at his rallies. – Trump’s Washington victory – US networks called the race in Washington state for Trump shortly after polls closed at 8:00 p.m. (0300 GMT Wednesday). With more than two-thirds of ballots counted, Trump earned 76 percent of the vote. “Thank you Washington! #Trump2016 #MakeAmericaGreatAgain,” the candidate wrote on Twitter. Trump is the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee, and while he is not officially the flag bearer yet he is on the cusp. He headed into the race in the northwestern state with 1,189 delegates, according to a CNN tally, just 48 delegates short of the 1,237 needed for the nomination. Washington state has 44 delegates up for grabs. Trump will therefore cross the threshold and clinch the nomination on June 7, when California and four other states vote on the final day of the Republican primary contest. The real estate mogul’s former rival, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, as well as Ohio Governor John Kasich and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, were still on the Washington ballot even though they had already dropped out of the race early this month following Trump’s decisive win in Indiana. Trump, a political neophyte whose provocative campaign has turned American politics on its head, will be officially installed as the Republican presidential nominee at the party’s national nominating convention in Cleveland, Ohio in July. He pivoted to the general election weeks ago, relentlessly criticizing his likely Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The former secretary of state has returned fire, although she is still engaged in the final stages of her Democratic battle against challenger Bernie Sanders. The senator from Vermont has an extremely narrow path to the nomination, and the math clearly favors Clinton. Washington held its Democratic primary in March, and Sanders won it easily. But Clinton, like Trump, is close to becoming her party flag bearer.

Nigeria to sign visa-free pact with 8 countries

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, says plans have been concluded to sign visa-free pacts with a bloc of eight African countries to promote economic partnership on the continent. Onyeama announced this in Abuja on Tuesday at a news confernce to mark one year of President Mohammadu Buhari’s Administration. The minister, who did not disclose the names of the countries making up the bloc, noted with concern that trading among African countries had been very low. He, however, said that with the new idea by the President Mohammadu Buhari led administration, “it is expected that there will be upsurge in economic activities. “ Africa is the centrepiece of our foreign policy but it is a paradox that as a Nigerian, you cannot go to an African country without a visa unlike what is obtainable in Western Europe. “To address this as a leader in the continent, the country is at a point of introducing an initiative to promote African trade as part of the country’s foreign policy of Africa as the centrepiece”, he said. Onyeama said Nigeria was trying to come up with an initiative, like the one in Western Europe where one could enter any sister country without a visa. According to him, what we are trying to do at the ministry is to promote visa-free, free movement of business people. “We want to start with about eight countries or see if they come up as a group of eight countries. At the presidential level, they agreed to that, and signed up to free movement. “If we can achieve that within a year, then other countries may want to join and we believe this is a better way to go than institutional ECOWAS etc, as countries take so long to ratify agreements. “We believe we can just start off, eight countries and they agree among themselves, then others will come in,” he said. Onyeama also added that it would not help if the continent continued to export just raw materials to developed nations. He said the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment was working towards enhancing doing business with ease in Nigeria. Onyeama said the ministry was working with the immigration to see rise in the number of visa issued to businessmen and investors “It is one of the cardinal strategies for the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to facilitate investors doing business in Nigeria”, he said. Onyeama said the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment had been mandated to ensure that there was reduction in the time it took to register companies.
