The missing 15 minutes that police need to solve year-old murder mystery of Ola Raji

The young Peckham man was shot and stabbed by two unknown men while cycling near his home in April last year

Detectives are trying to piece together what happened in the last fifteen minutes of a Peckham man’s life before he was shot and stabbed to death.
Twenty-one-year-old Ola Raji was murdered as he cycled past the Damilola Taylor Centre in East Surrey Grove, on the night of April 21, 2015.
Detectives believe Ola was confronted by two people and made a fresh appeal for evidence on the one-year anniversary of the day he was killed.
A £20,000 reward has also been re-advertised, in return for information that could lead to an arrest or prosecution.
Detective Chief Inspector William Reynolds told the News: “This is an important anniversary and it’s an important day.
“What we do know is he was shot dead at 10.30pm. So we have a fifteen-minute period where I need to know where Ola was and what he was doing.
“I don’t know whether he meant to meet anyone or if anyone saw him on his bike. The most important think now is I need to know why he left his house, where he was going, and did anyone see him. Then I will be able to fully account for his movements.”
On the fateful night, Ola left his house at 10.15pm without telling his parents where he was going.
Police believe he cycled to East Surrey Grove, usually only two minutes away by bike. The two men launched their assault on Ola at 10.30pm. He was shot at three times with what was believed to be a handgun.
Two shots hit the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School pupil as he cycled past, one hitting him in the chest, which proved fatal. Detective Reynolds said he believes Ola fell to the ground, “tried to get up”, and then collapsed between two parked cars. His attackers then rounded on Ola by stabbing him in the back with a bladed weapon.
The detective said. “One question is: were they waiting for him? Or were they waiting for someone else; was he shot by mistake?”

Ola’s body was found by a group of young women at 10.30pm. They held his body as he lay between two parked cars until an ambulance arrived.

Nursing Mother And 2 Others Nabbed For Stealing Dead Worker’s Benefits

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday arraigned the trio of Patience Owerema, Nwakoba Francisca and Okafor Kingsley before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for fraud. The accused were arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy, abuse of office, forgery, impersonation and diversion of funds to the tune of N3.7 million.

They allegedly conspired to divert the money, which was the terminal benefit of the late Udemba Clement, a former employee of NITEL/MTEL and father to the petitioner, Udemba Emmanuel. Following the death of his father, the petitioner had made efforts to collect the final entitlement\terminal benefits of his father to no avail. The petitioner, however, found out that the money had been paid into a certain account opened by the accused persons in the name of his deceased father.

One of the charge reads: ‘‘That you , Patience Owerema ,Nwokobia N. Francisca, Okafor Kingsley and Adegoke Adeniyi (now at large) on or about 8th April, 2011 at Abuja ,within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did convert the sum of N 3,766,160.00 (Three Million, Seven Hundred and Sixty- Naira) which sum you knew represented the proceeds of crime transferred from Zenith Bank Plc account into the account of one purported “Udemba Clement” domiciled at Oceanic Bank Plc (now Ecobank) with account No. 3120001011636 with the aim of disguising the origin of the money and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15(2) of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them. In view of their pleas, the prosecution counsel, Sadiq Hussaini, asked the court for a trial date. Counsels to the defendants prayed the court to grant their clients bail, but were refused.

However, Justice Nyako granted the second defendant, Francisca, a nursing mother, bail on compassionate grounds and ordered her counsel to file her bail application within one week. Both the first and third accused persons were, however, ordered to be remanded in Kuje and Suleja Prisons, respectively.
The case was adjourned till June 14 for commencement of trial.

NSCDC arrests CAC pastor for burying fetish items in church

The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church, Moses Abiodun, for allegedly burying fetish items inside his church in Ikota, in the Ifedore Local Government Area of the state.

He enjoined the people of the state to be very vigilant and always give useful information to the corps.

Abductors have not contacted family members –Anisulowo’s brother

A younger brother of abducted Senator Iyabo Anisulowo, Kola Popoola, says the abductors of her sister have yet to contact the family members or demand ransom.
Anisulowo, a former Minister of State for Education, was kidnapped on Wednesday while returning from her farm at Sawonjo, Igbogila, in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
She was said to have been kidnapped alongside her driver, Wasiu Afonja; security aide,  Damola Akinwande; and an unidentified cleaner at about 6.30pm.

“The men spoke both English and Yoruba languages. Mama kept asking them what they wanted but they didn’t answer.
The governorship candidates of Peoples Democratic Party and the Unity Party of Nigeria in Ogun State in the 2015 elections, Gboyega Isiaka and Prince Rotimi Paseda, also condemned Anisulowo’s abduction

16-year-old Rilwan hacks Lagos resident to death

The police in Lagos State have arrested a 16-year-old suspected cultist, Rilwan Okegbenro, for allegedly killing a man, Olawale Adebayo, who resided in Imosun in the Ikorodu area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Okegbenro, who confessed to being a cultist and gave no fixed address, was apprehended on Wednesday by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad during a raid in the area.

It was learnt that 18 suspects were arrested during the exercise.
Okegbenro told the police in his statement that he and two other gang members participated in the killing of 22-year-old Adebayo.
He said, “Two others, who are on the run, and I attacked the man behind a bank on Sagamu Road in the Ikorodu area. It was a Wednesday. We trailed him and my gang killed him. The man used to live at Imosun Close, Ikorodu.”
Our correspondent learnt that the brother of the deceased, identified as Ismaila Balogun, had also come to the police and identified Okegbenro as one of his brother’s attackers on that day.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Okegbenro’s arrest. She added that the police had launched a manhunt for the suspect’s fleeing gang members.
She said, “The raid was carried out on black spots in the Ikorodu area. In the process, Okegbenro, of no fixed address, was arrested. He has confessed to being a cult member and to have also participated in the killing of one Olawale Adebayo.
“The command has launched a manhunt for his fleeing accomplices – Ahmed and Taoreed. Investigation is still ongoing. The state command will continue to clamp down on criminals to make the state a safe place.”
Meanwhile, the police have also arrested a fake army sergeant, Ganiyu Tijani, at the Agric bus stop in the Ikorodu area of the state.

Jonathan shared ecological funds to PDP govs – Oshiomhole

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of favouring state governors elected on the platform of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, during his regime.
He specifically accused the former President of doling out N2bn from the Ecological Fund to each of the PDP governors without considering giving same to governors of the All Progressives Congress.
Oshiomhole made the allegation while speaking with State House correspondents after a meeting state governors had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The state governors had approached Buhari on the need for the Federal Government to assist state governments to cushion the effects of the economic downturn.
Oshiomhole said they were lucky to have at this time a President they could approach on such issues.
He said it would have been impossible for them to approach Jonathan to seek support without being given lectures on fiscal responsibility.
The governor said despite Jonathan’s posture, wastage was more at the Federal Government level during his tenure.
He said Buhari was showing the difference the APC promised by accommodating their governors irrespective of their party affiliations.
He said, “We are very lucky to have President Buhari at this time. I have been here now for seven-and-half years and I have had the opportunity to work with three Presidents, that is the truth.
“Under the last President, it would have been impossible for us to approach Abuja to give us support because we have personal challenges.
“We would have been given lectures on fiscal responsibility and all those kind of talks, even though the wastage was more here (federal level) than any other place at that time.
“We now have a President who recognises that he is not just President of the Federal Government, he is the President of the federation of which the states are part and regardless of our political affiliations.
“This is very important. Everybody is able to ask this President to give him support and he is giving, whereas in the recent past, some PDP governors got N2bn from the Ecological Fund. We the APC governors were not given but we promised to be different and I am happy this President is showing that difference.”
When asked for his view on the proposed new minimum wage by workers, Oshiomhole who is a former labour leader, said, “I have not seen the document proposing a new minimum wage but believing in your judgment that it is a proposal, from my own experience there is always a difference between a proposal and a final agreement.
“Man proposes, God disposes and in the real world, nobody gets what he wants, you get what you negotiate. Any day any time, wake me up, I believe in a living wage.”

We ‘ll recover looted fund to rebuild economy, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said his administration is bent on recovering the funds stolen from the public purse by some corrupt public office holders to rehabilitate the collapsed economy of the nation.
The president said this in his address read at the swearing-in-ceremony of 2016 Batch ‘A’ members of the National Youth Service Corps on Friday at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State.
The address was read on behalf of the President by the Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security  and Youth Engagement, Dr. Isaac Aluko.
The President lamented the high rate of youth unemployment in the country but said his administration would do everything possible to rebuild the economy and create jobs for the youths to contribute their quotas to the development of their fatherland.
Buhari, who said the NYSC had continued to be attractive to young graduates across the country despite the temporary challenge of insecurity said there were inadequate infrastructure  at various orientation camps. He, however, promised  to invest in youth development.
He said, ” The collapse of industries and the eventual over bearing  pressure to grab  public jobs has put the nation in a sorry economic state of unemployment.
“Thousands of gradutes from the higher institutions of learning get frustrated daily, as they search for non-existing jobs. That is why this administration is anxious to recover illicit wealth to channel them into enduring economic rehabilitation. Very soon, the gloomy situation would be reversed to put smiles on the faces of our young people
“In the interim, I urge you to embrace the prevailing palliative strategies put in place by public and private institutions. The effort of the NYSC which can be seen in several steps initiated toward arresting this ugly development must be commended.”
The president advised the youths to channel  their energy towards productive ventures and shun vices such as kidnapping, robbery and fraudulent acts.
The NYSC Coordinator in Osun State, Mrs. Regina Iluebbey, said the the scheme  registered 1,620 corps members for the batch while lauding their comportment.

Buhari’s reaction to herdsmen killings shocking – Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari for his reaction to increasing attacks and killings by herdsmen in several states in the country.
Soyinka in an address to the National Conference on Culture and Tourism on Wednesday said he was shocked by the President’s claim that the attacks would soon be over.
He added that comments made by the President and the government fell short of expectation and did not provide any reassurance for Nigerians.
He said, “When I read a short while ago, the Presidential assurance to this nation that the current homicidal escalation between the cattle prowlers and farming communities would soon be over, I felt mortified.
“He had the solution, he said. Cattle ranches were being set up, and in another 18 months, rustlings, destruction of livelihood and killings from herdsmen would be ‘a thing of the past’. Eighteen months, he assured the nation. I believe his Minister of Agriculture echoed that later, but with a less dispiriting time schema.
“Neither, however, could be considered a message of solace and reassurance for the ordinary Nigerian farmer and the lengthening cast of victims, much less to an intending tourist to the Forest Retreat of Tinana in the Rivers, the Ikogosi Springs or the Moslem architectural heritage of the ancient city of Kano. In any case, the external tourists have less hazardous options.”
The Nobel laureate, who said the signs were already clear and the rampage of impunity was already manifesting a cultic intensity of alarming proportions almost a year ago, noted that the current violence and killings by the herdsmen would among other things hurt tourism in the country.
Despite the warning signs, he said the government failed to react with his attempt to utilise the Open Forum platform of the Centre for Culture and International Understanding, Oshogbo, to launch a national debate on the topic  – ‘Sacred cows or sacred rights’ almost a year ago also failing to take place.
The plan had been to invite Buhari to give a keynote address at the event.
The failure to react to the warning signs allowed the situation to degenerate beyond arbitrary violence, according to Soyinka.
He said, “It is not merely arbitrary violence that reigns across the nation but total, undisputed impunity. Impunity evolves and becomes integrated in conduct when crime occurs and no legal, logical and moral response is offered. I have yet to hear this government articulate a firm policy of non-tolerance for the serial massacres have become the nation’s identification stamp.
“I have not heard an order given that any cattle herders caught with sophisticated firearms be instantly disarmed, arrested, placed on trial, and his cattle confiscated.
“The nation is treated to an eighteen-month optimistic plan which, to make matters worse, smacks of abject appeasement and encouragement of violence on innocents.
“Let me repeat, and of course I only ask to be corrected if wrong: I have yet to encounter a terse, rigorous, soldierly and uncompromising language from this leadership, one that threatens a response to this unconscionable blood-letting that would make even Boko Haram repudiate its founding clerics.”
Soyinka, who said herdsmen were perhaps humanity’s earliest known tourists, said they must be thought about the culture of settlement and “learn to seek accommodation with settled hosts wherever encountered”.
“The leadership of any society cannot stand idly and offer solutions that implicitly deem the massacres of innocents mere incidents on the way to that learning school,” he warned.
“For every crime, there is a punishment, for every violation, there must be restitution. The nomads of the world cannot place themselves above the law of settled humanity.”

COUNCIL HOUSE: FG to build housing estates across the country

The federal government said it had designed mass housing estates which would be built in the six geo-political zones in the country, adding that the project would commence as soon as the 2016 budget was passed.
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who disclosed this at the 9th Architects Colloquium conference in Abuja,  explained that the designs of the estates took cognizance of the different environmental factors of each region.
The minister, who was represented by Mr. Sani Gidado, stated that in the past, mass housing estates were built uniformly without consideration for the peculiarity of the environment and the location of the project.
He said for over 16 years, the government had stopped financing housing projects directly, but the present government has reversed the trend and is bent on financing mass housing across the six geo-political zones.
Fashola said, “Over the last 16 years, the government has deliberately stopped financing housing projects, but that has been found to have created problems,  especially for the low and medium income groups.  For that reason, the present government intends to provide adequate funding for provision of houses projects directly. That is not to say the private-public partnership would be discouraged, no.”
The President, Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, Umaru Aliyu, called on the Federal Government to stop deploying architects on national service in secondary and primary schools, saying this was affecting the years of pupillage the young professionals were supposed to have in order to sit for the professional competency examination.

Photo: Man burns Ex-lover, Grandmum, Uncle, 2 Kids because She Denied Him S*x

A 26yrs old man, Oluwaseyi Babatola, burnt his ex lover, her mother, kids and uncle because she died him s*x. He revealed that he is now been haunted by the spirits of the children he murdered.

Speaking to Punch in Abuja, he stated that he was disturbed by the thoughts of the two children that died along with their grandmother, mother and uncle, when he set their apartment on fire on April 15, 2015, at Sabongari, Bwari, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The fire consumed the building,  including the apartment of the Babatolas, and also injured the suspect.

Babatola, who is being detained by the FCT Special Anti-Robbery Squad, identified his victims as Janet Isuawa; her sons, Samuel and Osaze; her cousin, Taphael; and Janet’s mother.

Babatola, a phone technician, stated that he had wanted to commit suicide after setting the family on fire, but was dissuaded by his younger brother, James, who asked him to report the incident to the police.

Explaining what led to the tragedy, the suspect said he started dating Janet, a divorcee, sometime ago, adding that he supported her and the children financially.

According to him, the relationship developed problems after he demanded s*x, noting that each time he asked for s*x, Janet would turn him down and taunt him.

Babatola said matters came to a head on April 12 when Janet informed him that his mother had told her that he suffered from hernia and therefore could not date him.

He said, “Janet said my mother told her that I suffer from hernia, and that she could not date me; she called me a ‘mugu’ (fool), and said she had chopped my money. So, I went to where she was charging the phone I bought for her and took it.

“She attacked me and bit my chest, and as I struggled to free myself from her grip, her cousin, Taphael, came in and pushed me down and held me there while she beat me with her fists. After I left the house, Janet’s younger sister called me on the telephone and abused me, saying they would deal with me if I come to the house again.”

Babatola stated that he moved to an area called Arab Road in Bwari, where he stayed with a friend, adding that he kept getting telephone calls from Janet’s sister, who said he would be dealt with if he went back to the house.

“On the night of April 15, around 11pm, I went to the house and found that the gate was locked. I scaled the fence into the compound. I went towards Janet’s room and saw her sleeping, as the window was opened because there was no power supply. I went to the bathroom, where she kept a gallon of fuel and poured it into the room through the window; the room caught fire from a lighted lantern,” he said.

He further explained that he headed for the nearby bush to kill himself after coming to his senses.

“I headed for the bush to hang myself, but my phone suddenly rang and my brother told me that our house just got burnt; I told him I did it and that I was about to commit suicide. He said I should not, and persuaded me to report to the police,” Babatola added.

The technician said every night, he remembered how he used to relate with Janet’s two sons, noting that he had not been able to erase their memories from his mind.

“I can’t get them off my mind, they haunt me every time; I thought it was only Janet that was in the room, I didn’t know the children were there. I thought they had gone for a vigil with their grandmother who attended vigil every Thursday,” he said.

A senior police officer said Babatola did not know that he had killed all the family members, until he saw their charred corpses the next morning.

More INEC Officers, Top Bankers To Be Arrested for Collecting Election Bribe from Diezani

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is set to arrest more officials of INEC and election monitors that received various bribes in the N23bn funds from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke to rig the presidential election for Goodluck Jonathan.
The EFCC had arrested the MD and Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, for handling $115m for Diezani in the build-up to the presidential election.

Okonkwo was alleged to have helped in converting the money to Naira (N23bn) which was then disbursed to INEC officials and election monitors under the instruction of Diezani’s son, Ugonna, for the electoral chiefs to manipulate the elections results.

A reliable source at the EFCC told Punch that, “Ugonna prepared a list of beneficiaries that would get the money and it was distributed about a day or two before the elections. We have started tracing those who collected money and our aim is to recover the funds.

“All the electoral officers, who betrayed public trust would be arrested. All EFCC zonal offices have been given the directive to investigate in their respective areas of jurisdictions.”

The EFCC had, two weeks ago, arrested the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the 2015 election in Rivers State, Mrs. Gesila Khan, for allegedly collecting N185.8m while one Fidelia Omoile who was the INEC electoral officer in the Isoko-South Local Government Area of Delta State, allegedly got N112.4m.

Apart from tracing over N112m to her, the commission also recovered some sensitive electoral materials during a search on her apartments in Edo and Delta states.

The commission also arrested one Oluchi Brown, who was the INEC administrative secretary in Delta State. She allegedly received over N111m.

Further investigations by detectives revealed that Brown had about $75,857 in an account in the US.

The anti-graft agency also arrested one Edem Effanga, who is a retired INEC official.

He was arrested alongside his alleged accomplice, Immaculata Asuquo, who is the Head, Voter Education, INEC, Akwa Ibom State.

He was alleged to have received over N241.1m, which he allegedly shared among INEC ad hoc workers during the last election.

Meanwhile, the commission has intensified its search for Diezani’s son.

According to sources at the EFCC, Ugonna is the key to arresting all those involved in the case.

EFCC officials had stated that Diezani’s son served as a middleman between the ex-minister and the bank MD.

Ugonna is the Head of Business Development and Commercial Marketing at Radam Maritime Services Limited, a firm, which is headed by his father, Alison Madueke, a former Chief of naval Staff, who is also under investigation by the EFCC for alleged money laundering.

He is said to have business interests in the United States and the United Kingdom.

A senior official, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “We have launched a manhunt for Ugonna, who the suspects said was the one who drew up a list of individuals, who should be given the N23bn ($115m).

“We don’t know exactly where he is but we will get him. He needs to explain his role in the sharing of the money because the bank officials have been mentioning his name since they were brought in.”

Ugonna, who is an engineer, burst into the limelight in 2012 when photos showing his ostentatious lifestyle went viral on the Internet.

In one of such pictures, the graduate of University of Maryland College Park in the US, was seen flying in a private jet and later drinking champagne in a limousine. He has also been seen displaying wads of dollar notes on social media.

Sources at the EFCC said they would arrest more employees of Fidelity Bank, who allegedly participated in the sharing of the $115m.

A detective said there were others in the bank, especially at the Head Office, who would have been aware of the bazaar but failed to alert the appropriate authorities.

“Currently, we have the MD as well as the Head of Operations, Mr. Martins Izuogbe. However, we have reason to believe that they are not the only two that were involved in the bazaar. In the coming days, we will arrest more.”

Woman Beats Her Landlord’s Wife To Death In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a resident of Shobowale Street in the Alagbado area of the state, Victoria Alaba, for allegedly killing the wife of her landlord during a scuffle.
The deceased, Mrs. Amosa Ogunyemi, had ordered Alaba and other tenants not to wash dirty clothes at one section on the premises because the compound was being messed up.

It was said that the woman ignored the order and was washing on the premises on Saturday when Mrs Ogunyemi approached her and told her to vacate the spot.

According to Punch, Alaba declined the directive, causing an altercation between the two.

A source close to the family told Punch that Alaba, in her 30s, pounced on the deceased and beat her up, but another resident said they engaged in a scuffle during which Ogunyemi gave up the ghost.

It was learnt that the landlord’s wife, who was said to be in her late 50s, was rushed to a hospital in the area, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The source, who declined to mention his name, said, “The landlord’s wife had warned on several occasions that tenants should stop washing clothes at the spot, but Victoria (Alaba) did not listen. On Saturday, she chose to wash her dirty clothes at the spot again. The landlord’s wife walked up to her and told her to leave the spot. She refused and they started exchanging words.

“She pounced on Amosa (Ogunyemi) and pushed her to the ground. The woman became unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but she died. The tenant has been arrested by policemen from the Alagbado division.”

However, a resident of the area, who identified himself simply as Adamu, said the argument between the two women led to a fight.

“I was not there, but I was told that it was a fight and the woman (Ogunyemi) was overpowered by the tenant. She died in the process,” he added.

Other residents approached by our correspondent, who visited the neighbourhood on Wednesday, refused to speak on the issue.

In the deceased’s residence, a one storeyed-building, some sympathisers gathered under a tent outside, while others were with the husband of the late woman in a living room.

The distraught widower and a relative said the matter had been amicably resolved and called one of the deceased’s children, identified as Kazeem, to speak to our correspondent.

The son told Punch that the family members were not interested in taking any legal action against the suspect, adding that his mother had been buried according to Islamic rites.

He said, “We have resolved the matter and the police have released her corpse to us. We don’t have any comment on how the incident happened. All we are going to say is that everything is settled. Thank you.”

Lagos Police PRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident in a text message, adding that the suspect was transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, for further investigation.

She said, “The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has ordered the case to be transferred to the SDCI for discreet investigation..."
