Ministers to Nigerians: We’re making progress

LAGOS — SIX serving ministers in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, appraised the nearly one year of the administration with a match of his promises and performance and concluded that remarkable progress had been made.  MEETING: From left, Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola; Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Ibe Kachikwu; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyema; and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Okechukwu Enelamah, at a Town Hall Meeting organised by Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, in Lagos, yesterday.MEETING: From left, Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola; Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Ibe Kachikwu; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyema; and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr Okechukwu Enelamah, at a Town Hall Meeting organised by Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, in Lagos, yesterday. They also reviewed the key programmes of the administration within the context of the current expectation of Nigerians for the actualization of the government’s change agenda and urged the populace not to despair. The ministers, who said this in Lagos at a Town Hall meeting organised by the Ministry of Information, noted that the government was being nudged by the pains of Nigerians to find not just solutions to the various national problems but sustainable responses. The event, which was the maiden edition in the series of the government’s town hall meetings that would be held across the six geo-political zones, was a platform for the ministers to present their scorecards since coming on board. The ministers, who spoke in the light of the public mood over critical national concerns include Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola; Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu; Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Minster of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyema; and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Okechukwu Enelamah. Also at the forum were Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, who was represented by his deputy,  Dr. Oluranti Adebule; former governor of the state, Alhaji Lateef Jakande; Chief Femi Okunu; members of the National Assembly and traditional rulers. Others include representatives of the following groups: Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC; Trade Union Congress, TUC; Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU; Non Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU; National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE; National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS; leaders of market associations and artisans, among others. Why fuel is still scarce —Kachikwu In his remarks, Kachikwu disclosed that 30 per cent of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, supplied in the country was often diverted to neighbouring countries, noting that the practice was responsible for the substantial absence of the commodity in the country. He said: “Understandably, most times people define what we have done in the context of fuel supply. But what is the problem with fuel supply? It is simple: by the time we started last year, the government owed marketers N600 billion in unpaid subsidy arrears. The effect of that was that many of them went out of business as they didn’t have the liquidity and stopped importation. “Now the traditional model that always worked for this country is that NNPC will bring you 50 per cent of the supply and the balance 50 percent is always provided by the marketers. So if you, therefore, have zero percent supply from the marketers, you have 50 percent deficiency in the supply. And NNPC had to struggle to fill that gap. “But this was a capacity that we did not have and the funding that we did not have. The second was that after we struggled and did that payment in November, there was no sufficient forex line to open up letters of credit.” Fuel is being diverted to neighbouring countries “Sadly, even for the short term measures that we put in place, over 30 percent of whatever it is that we supply in this country is diverted. Lagos, for example, in the last five days has been pumped with 400 trucks of products into the state. But the maximum consumption of Lagos State is 250 trucks. Most of those trucks are diverted from Lagos. They move from the cities into the hinterlands and cross to neighbouring countries. Some go to Chad, some go to Cameroun, etc.” We need to deliver more power incrementally, sustainably —Fashola On his part, Fashola stated that delivering more power incrementally and sustainably remained the solution to the power crisis in Nigeria. His words: “I have been looking on some of the things that have been done well, some of the things that could have been done better but I will summarise the power issue simply in one word. There is not enough power. 5,000MW for 170 million people is not just enough. The solution is delivering more power in an incremental and sustainable basis. “As far as the roads are concerned, especially for road workers, road transporters, the unions, and ultimately as an index of doing business, the cost of transportation ultimately affects how cheaply or expensive food reaches the table, how efficiently services are delivered. “As far as housing is concerned, that perhaps is my most difficult responsibility. I am working and very close now to delivering a housing model that some majority of Nigerians can say, if I get this kind of house, I will live there.” Why we went for change —Ameachi On his part, Amaechi said: “The reason  we went for change was that things were becoming impossible for the country. Everyone agreed that the only solution was to change the government by bringing in new set of public officials to ensure that you and I can eat. “But you will also agree with us that the results you expect will not happen in one year. You will also agree with us that we just only want you to be patient, we understand your pains. If I were in your shoes, we will feel the same pains. If anybody here tells you that we don’t understand your pain, that will be wrong.” Buhari’s trips not randomly selected-Onyema Also speaking, Onyema dismissed mixed reactions trailing the President’s foreign trips, stating that the trips were carefully chosen to align with the priorities of the administration. He said: “The trips of Mr. President are not something that are selected on random basis. They are carefully selected and designed to fit into the priorities and objectives of the government.” Similarly, Lai Mohammed said: “This town hall meeting is a testimony that this administration takes very seriously the concept of participatory democracy. This government is committed to ensuring that there is no communication gap between the government and the governed. No other platform is more potent and direct than this town hall meeting as it brings closer the officials of the government in direct contact with representatives from all works of life.”

I Did Not Go To The Native Doctor To Kill Oshiomhole - Deputy Governor Reacts

The Deputy Governor of Edo, Dr Pius Odubu, has denied an allegation that he sponsored native doctors to kill his boss, Gov. Adams Oshiomhole, to enable him take over as the state's governor.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Kelly Odaro, Odubu said the allegation was being peddled by mischief makers and blackmailers bent on destroying his cordial relationship with his boss.

Odubu has also raised an alarm over an alleged plot by some persons to circulate fliers round Benin City with a view to further destroy his image and ignite crisis between him and the governor.
‎‎
"As a practising Catholic I will not do anything that is unbecoming of a true Christian in the name of politics.

"God knows that I have never had any pact with any witch/native doctor to kill anyone or avenge for me and I will never condescend to that extent as long as God lives. It is against my faith.

"The Bible teaches that even when the innocent suffers and mischief makers and traducers appear to triumph by their chief blackmail, it is for God alone to avenge.

"I will, by special Grace of God, continue to disappoint the dubious expectations of those who are bent on driving a wedge between me and Oshiomhole.

"It is my nature and character to be loyal to those who God has set over me because they are my instruments.

"At times like this, blackmailers are at their best but I have decided to take solace in God who knows the hearts of men, trusting and believing as always that God will vindicate the just.

"I wish to reiterate that I have no rift with my boss who I revere and deeply appreciates.”

PATHETIC: Six Ekiti doctors, driver perish in auto crash

Six members of the Ekiti State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association, including their driver, on Sunday lost their lives in a road traffic accident along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
The men were on their way to Sokoto for the 56th NMA Annual General Conference/Annual Delegates Meeting when their vehicle was involved in a fatal crash. It was gathered that the rear tyre of the vehicle burst while the driver was speeding.
The impact, it was gathered, set the vehicle on a ghastly somersault, killing the six medical doctors and the driver while others were injured.
The Ekiti NMA Chairman, Dr. John Akinbote, who survived the accident, told  one of our correspondents on Monday that survivors were still receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Kaduna.
A statement on Monday in Abuja co-signed by the NMA President, Dr. Kayode Obembe, and the Secretary-General, Dr. Adewumi Alayaki, identified the deceased as Dr. Alex Akinyele, Secretary, NMA Ekiti Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti and Dr. Tunde Aladesanmi, General Surgeon, FTH, Ido Ekiti.
Others are Dr. O.J. Taiwo, anatomic pathologist, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti; Dr. Ogunseye J.B., of the National Association of General and Government Medical and Dental Practitioners and National Secretary, Hospital Management Board, Ekiti; Dr. Olajide O., President, Association of Resident Doctors, EKSUTH; Dr. Atolani Adeniyi, Secretary, NAGGMDP, Ekiti State; and Mr. Ajibola, the NMA Ekiti driver.
The statement added that survivors “are in stable condition and are receiving medical attention under the auspices of the Chairman of the Kaduna State NMA and his team.”
It stated that the bereaved families had been contacted and arrangements were being made  to convey the bodies back to Ekiti State, adding that burial arrangements would be communicated in due course.
The NMA said it had sent its representatives to Kaduna for an on-the-spot assessment and to complement the effort of the Kaduna medical team.
“While the conference continues, the National Officers’ Committee hereby directs that all doctors should observe one week of mourning from Tuesday, April 26 to Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Every doctor should put on black band on the left arm over white overall,” the NMA directed.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has commiserated with the President and all members of the NMA over the loss of their colleagues.
A statement by the Director, Media and Public Relations, Ministry of Health, Boade Akinola, said the minister prayed for the quick recovery of the survivors.
Also, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has declared a three-day mourning, describing the situation as the lowest point in the history of the state and a monumental loss, not only to the people of Ekiti State but to Nigerians.
The three days of mourning which started on Monday would end on Wednesday.
Fayose, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, has directed that all flags should be flown at half-mast.
“Ekiti has lost some of the best trees in its forest of medicine. I am deeply sad. This is one loss too many.
“Death of seven prominent indigenes of a state in one day and at the same period is a burden too heavy to bear. It is my prayer that God, who is the only Giver and Taker of life, will give Ekiti people the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
The governor urged families, friends and professional colleagues of the deceased, especially members of the NMA to take solace in God.
Also, the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, has condoled with the people of the state, particularly members of the NMA over the death of the six doctors.
Oluwawole, in a condolence message signed by his Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, said it was a grievous moment, not only for Ekiti State, but also the entire nation and its health sector.
But activities at hospitals in Ekiti State were paralysed on Monday  as medical workers protest the untimely death of the medical doctors.
At the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti the protesting members of staff alleged that a top member of the management of the hospital was behind the death.
An eyewitness said medical workers trooped out as early as 7am and locked the main gate of the hospital in protest, which caused  panic among patients and their families.
The Publicity Secretary of the Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals, Ekiti State branch, Mr. Tope Ogunleye, said, “This isn’t really a protest, we are just using this avenue to register our grievances.
“Yesterday afternoon, we had a terrible incident where three of our doctors here lost their lives in a ghastly vehicle accident. The three doctors are Dr. Alex Akinyele, Dr. Tunde Aladesanmi and Dr. Adeniyi.
“We are worried that this tragic incident is becoming too regular. Sometime last year, we lost four of our members. It is more worrisome that we learnt that all this is happening because so many diabolical things have been going on in the hospital.”
However, the FETHI’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Lawrence Ayodele, described the death as a national disaster.
“It is not about the state, but the whole country because it involves six senior doctors and a driver. On behalf of the entire hospital community, we pray that this kind of very sad event would not happen again. We need a period of prayer to put an end to this kind of ugly incident.”
Ayodele appealed to the workers not to allow emotion to override their sense of reasoning.
“I got the information this morning. But let me say that it is normal that when there is a grief, people can bring up any kind of emotion. But we should not allow emotion to override our thinking and grief should not push us to doing what we are not supposed to do. I plead with them to be peaceful.”
The CMD said the families of the deceased had been contacted by both the state government and the NMA.
At EKSUTH in Ado-Ekiti, workers were seen in groups discussing the accident in hushed tones.
The CMD of EKSUTH, Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe, said the management had sent five ambulances to Kaduna to evacuate the corpses of the deceased.
Ogundipe, who appealed to members to be peaceful, prayed that God would grant the NMA, the deceased’s families and the Ekiti government the fortitude to bear the loss.

Court jails Larmode’s accuser three years

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, on Monday sentenced to three years imprisonment, Mr. George Uboh, who accused a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, of diverting loot recovered from suspects.
Justice S.E Aladetoyinbo convicted Uboh and sentenced him to three years imprisonment on charges of criminal breach of trust bordering on his roles in converting the vehicles of the defunct Police Equipment Foundation to his own use.
The judge imposed an option of N1m fine on Uboh.
Uboh paid the N1m fine and was released to go immediately after the judgment was passed.
Though Uboh was charged under the provisions of section 314, he was convicted under section 312 of the law which also bordered on another variant of breach of trust, because the EFCC was unable to prove that he (Uboh) was an employee of PEF.
Justice Aladetoyinbo in convicting him held that there was inconsistency in his statement at the point of his arrest and during trial.
Uboh was said to have claimed that the vehicles in question were compensation for the debt the PEF owed him and during trial he claimed that the vehicles were used for trade by barter for the debt the foundation was owing him.
Uboh was arraigned by the EFCC on a three count charge bordered on criminal breach of trust involving the sale of PEF vehicles.
He allegedly abused his position as a former Head of Security and Communication Department, Police Equipment Foundation, to convert the properties of the foundation to his personal use.
He had pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him by the judge. This set the stage for a full trial during which the prosecution called several witnesses to prove its case.
Uboh claimed that the former National Coordinator, PEF, Kenny Martins, gave him some PEF vehicles to offset the debt owed him by the Foundation.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Monday that,  “during cross-examination, he (Uboh) admitted that he did not have any evidence of transfer of ownership of the vehicles from PEF.”

Fulani herdsmen kill 20, raze church in Enugu community

No fewer than 20 persons in Ukpabi Nimbo, an agrarian community in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, were killed during an attack by Fulani herdsmen on Monday.
It was learnt that scores of armed cattle rearers, reportedly numbering more than 100, stormed the sleepy community in the early hours of Monday.
A national newspaper had reported on Monday that the herdsmen had recruited scores of gunmen from Nasarawa State for the impending attack on the Enugu community.
Sources in the community said sporadic gunshots were heard as the rampaging herdsmen moved to sack villagers from their homes.
It was gathered that the invading cattle rearers carried guns, bows, arrows, machetes and swords to execute their mission.
The invaders also set a Catholic church in the area on fire.
Many of the villagers were said to have escaped to neighbouring communities in the Uzo-Uwani area, but it was gathered that people in the nearby towns were also worried about possible attacks from the herdsmen.
A police source told our correspondent that as of the time of filing this report, the corpses of five persons, who died in the attack, had been recovered.
It was also learnt that the corpses, which were deposited at the morgue in Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, were recovered from farmlands.
There were indications that more bodies would be recovered as a combined team of police and military personnel, who moved into the community to quell the attack, had yet to reach all the affected areas.
But sources in the Ukpabi Nimbo community said more than 20 of their kith and kin were killed before help could come.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said the total number of casualties could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
Amaraizu, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the situation in the community had been brought under control, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nwodibo Ekechukwu, had led other officers of the command to the affected areas.
The PPRO stated, “We moved in to ensure that the situation did not degenerate beyond control and right now, everything is under control.
“The Commissioner of Police is there with other officers and men and the area is being secured.
“We can’t give the total number of casualties yet; it is when the operation is concluded that we will collate figures and give a definite number.”
Many members of the Ukpabi Nimbo community, who are mostly farmers, have their homes around their farmlands.
It was gathered that several houses as well as farms and crops were also destroyed by the herdsmen.
Our correspondent learnt that the herdsmen had previously fallen out with the villagers over their grazing activities in the community.
Sources in the community disclosed that the villagers had been resisting the use of their farmlands as grazing fields by the herdsmen.
Our correspondent learnt that the situation further degenerated after some herdsmen, who operated in Ukpani Nimbo and other communities in the Uzo-Uwani area, claimed that their cows were missing.
There were also allegations by the herdsmen that some of their colleagues were killed in the area.
The villagers alleged that most of the herdsmen, who were involved in Monday’s attack, were brought from Nasarawa State by other Fulani cattle rearers who were already operating in Enugu.
Our correspondent gathered that before the herdsmen struck on Monday, there was tension in Ukpabi Nimo and other communities in the Uzo-Uwani area over rumour that about 500 herdsmen were mobilising to attack them.
The villagers were said to have alerted the Enugu State Government and the leadership of the Enugu State Police Command after they were informed of an imminent attack by herdsmen.
According to sources, the Chairman, Transition Committee, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Cornell Onwubuya, who was said to have informed Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the police commissioner of the fears nursed by villagers, also met the leadership of the Hausa-Fulani community in the area over the matter.
Interestingly, the rumoured planned attack by 500 herdsmen was the subject of an emergency stakeholders meeting in the Uzo-Uwani area council at the weekend, hours before the cattle rearers struck.
The meeting, reportedly also deliberated on the incessant herdsmen-related problems in the area including several cases of murder, kidnapping and rape recorded in the recent past.
At the meeting, Onwubuya reportedly explained that some leaders of the Hausa-Fulani community had confirmed the rumoured plan by the herdsmen to launch an attack on the area.
Also at the said emergency stakeholders meeting, leaders of the Hausa-Fulani community in Enugu reportedly assured their hosts that they would take urgent steps to avert the planned attack.
