Oshiomhole Increases Minimum Wage From N18,000 To N25,000

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Sunday announced a new minimum wage of N25,000 with effect from May 1, 2016 for workers...

Oshiomhole who was addressing a rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to mark this year’s Workers’ Day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, announced the increment from the present N18, 000 minimum.

Osun workers slam Aregbesola over half salary

The Nigeria Labour Congress in Osun State has criticised Governor Rauf Aregbesola for paying workers half salaries since July 2015.
The chairman of a faction of the NLC in the state, Mr. Yusuf Gambi, said this in Osogbo on Sunday while addressing journalists during a rally by the faction to mark this year Workers’ Day.
Gambi said it was unfortunate that workers were always at the receiving end whenever there was an financial challenge. He criticised the government for executing capital projects while allowing workers to lament in penury due to half salaries which he said were not even regular.
He said workers were not against execution of capital projects but doing so at the detriment of the workers, who were the geese laying the golden eggs was wrong.
Gambi said the N56,000 minimum wage proposed by the NLC for workers was realisable and should by approved to alleviate the suffering of the majority of Nigerian workers.
He said, “This is the time that Nigerian workers will take their destiny into their hands, we will not want a situation whereby the state govenrment will subject us to unneccsary salvery and we must not forget the fact that Labour is the major machinery and we can’t allow anybody to be using us how they want.
“Government must dance to our own tunes by granting us our requests and let the worker enjoy what they are labour for. Workers salary must not be delayed again.
“Osun State Government designed another means of sacking some workers from the tertiary institutions owns by the state over a mere petition and plan is ongoing to reduce staff strength at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo because doctors embarked on a strike while demanding for their rights.
“Why is it that civil servants are the only ones made to suffer whenever there is an economic crisis? Political office holders enjoy at the expense of Nigerian masses . The present administration should be determined to reduce the cost of governance and enhance revenue collections.”
Gambi said the Ajaero faction of the NLC which he belonged was in support of the anti corruption drive of the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration.
He also lauded Buhari for his seriousness in tackling the problem of Boko Haram, saying considerable peace had since been restored especially in the North East.

How I escaped assassination – Oshiomhole’s deputy

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, on Sunday narrated how he narrowly escaped death in the hands of suspected assassins in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.
Odubu, an aspirant under the All Progressives Congress for the September 10 governorship election, had last Saturday been reportedly attacked by some armed thugs during his visit to Auchi to meet with party delegates in the area.
The thugs were said to have claimed that they were mobilised with the sum of one million naira.
Odubu, who had reportedly been at loggerheads with Governor Adams Oshiomhole over his ambition, was denied access to the APC secretariat at Fugar, allegedly on the instruction of a deputy director of protocol at the Government House.
The situation was later said to have angered some delegates who forced the gate open to enable the deputy governor meet with them (delegates) outside.
He was said to have left for Auchi and was meeting with some delegates when the suspected thugs suddenly appeared and fired gunshots, leaving several persons injured, including a policeman and an operative of the Department of State Security.
A source who did not want to be mentioned had told our correspondent that although Odubu was not injured in the attack, the thugs claimed to have been mobilised with the sum of one million naira.‎
However, Odubu, who spoke through his campaign organisation, during a press briefing in Benin, said that he had to be shielded inside a hall to avoid “direct bullet contacts”.
“Surprisingly, at Auchi, the deputy governor and his team met with passionate, patriotic (and) huge number of delegates but no sooner had the meeting begun than the gunmen opened fire outside the secretariat on both security men and members of the deputy governor’s entourage and delegates. It was such a shocking and gory sight to behold,” he explained.
He noted that although the attack was “orchestrated directly at his person” and geared towards disrupting the aims of the campaign, seven persons sustained varying degrees of injury and were receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching hospital and another hospital in Auchi.
According to him, the victims include, a DSS operative, Patrick Amakiri‎; his escort police commander, Inspector Agge Felix; and a driver, Zibiri Yakubu.
Others are Ogbeso Nice, Inu Umoru, Osabuohien Igiebor, Matthew Ajayi‎ and another person whose identity could not be ascertained.
Speaking on behalf of the Odubu Campaign Organisation, a former Minority Whip in the House of Representatives, Mr. Samson Osagie, disclosed that preliminary investigation by the organisation had revealed three principal suspected masterminds of the attack, which he described as an act of cowardice “perpetrated by those who dread a free, fair and credible democratic contest” and an attempt to compel the deputy governor “quit the governorship race or be eliminated”.
Osagie also called on the national leadership of the APC to intervene in the happenings in the state.
“This, to us, is the height of naked display of cruelty, animosity, acrimony, intolerance, gross irresponsibility and man’s inhumanity to man,”‎ he added.
The leadership of the ‎state chapter of the APC, condemned the attack on the deputy governor, describing it as “absolute madness” which he said had become “endemic” in the party.
The state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Godwin Erhahon, who stated this, said, “I am not a member of any campaign organisation; I am not a supporter of any aspirant. But in a moment like this, where the blood of some of our members have been shed and then members of this (Odubu’s) organisation have also been traumatised, it is only fair and proper that the party identifies with the traumatised and join them in thanking God that nobody died in the process.
“Therefore, I am here to also condemn what happened yesterday at Auchi, on behalf of all the APC members and leaders who are not yet infested with the ongoing madness that has become endemic in the party. What happened yesterday was absolute madness. I think we should pray for them (perpetrators) so that sanity can come into them, otherwise, they will end up destroying themselves.”

Onibeji Foundation. CEO Sunday Aluko Sorowai. A Nigerian from Aramoko Ekiti In Ekiti State. I started this foundation to help the orphanage and motherless people.I have made a promise to send 30 children to school in Ekiti State. I have decided to help the orphanage because, I know what people are passing through in life .I pray to God' to give me more power to help who need help .God bless you all

What do you think happens to the average orphan child?

Beyond suffering and the ultimate tragedy of death, the children that do survive, often do so in ways that demeans and

criminalizes themselves and brings suffering to others as well. The sad reality though, is that if a good and caring person is not there to provide what they need, who is? Pimps, child labor bosses, terrorists, rebel armies with child soldiers, child traffickers, even less - than- good- willed -relatives who want a personal slave. The end result is truly heartbreaking as many of the orphan children out there will die of starvation and issues related to malnutrition. They will die from preventable diseases. They will die at the hands of others and themselves. They will spend much of their life in jail. They will do harm to others and impact the world in a negative fashion. Back to questions.

Depression is an illness people fail to recognize, especially in Nigeria. Many people have lost their lives due to depression, yet it’s still not acknowledged as an illness.
The worst part of it all is the fact that most of the people suffering from depression end up committing suicide, especially when they don’t have their love ones to help them overcome it.

My victim’s daughter ‘betrayed’ me – Suspected serial burglar

A suspected burglar, Samson Ugbusun, has revealed how the daughter of his victim gave him up to the police after he made love overtures to her.
Ugbusun, a 28-year-old bricklayer, was arrested by operatives of the Edo State Police Command for allegedly breaking into the home of an unsuspecting resident at Etete, in Oredo Local Government Area of the state, carting away two mobile phones.
It was gathered that after he successfully carried out the operation, the suspect went ahead to invite his victim’s daughter to spend a night with him in his apartment.
According to him, he was later arrested by some policemen from the Etete Police Division after she leaked his whereabouts to her mother.
Ughusun, who hails from Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state, said, “I stole handsets at Etete, through the window around 11pm. I removed the handset through the window of the house by tearing the net. This is my first time.
“I saw her (victim’s daughter) number on the phone I stole. I called the girl and told her that I love her. She came and spent a night with me and went back to school. When she came to my place, she told her mother my address and everything; that was how they got me.”
He also blamed his alleged crime on family problem, adding that he stole mobile phones to enable him to generate the sum of N800,000 for his late father’s burial.
“It was due to family problems. My father has a house and my family (members) are trying to push me so that I would leave the house for them. They said that if I don’t bury my father, I can’t claim ownership of the house.
“I wanted to sell the phones on the streets. But unfortunately, they caught me and I returned the phones back to the owners. I regret it,” Ugbusun lamented.
However, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Osifo Abiodun, who confirmed the suspect’s arrest, said Ugbusun would soon be charged to court as a prima facie case of burglary and stealing had been preferred against him.
Abiodun said, “Samson Ugbusun specialises in stealing from unsuspecting victims. He can steal handsets as if he had some powers to do so. Luck ran against him when he opened the window of the complainant at night.
“Constructively, he broke in and pulled the handset with a long stick, picked it from the window. The occupant raised an alarm and he was subsequently arrested. He has confessed to the crime, including other crimes he committed before.
“Very soon, he will be arraigned in court because a prima facie case of burglary and stealing is established against him; he will not go unpunished,” the police spokesman added.

Horror: Rejected suitor butchers MTN worker, stabs victim’s mother

The tragic incident of Sunday, April 24, was one that the family of Ashinwo, did not see coming.
Had a prophet told Oluwatosin, her siblings and their widow mother, of the danger that lurked around the corner that day, it is unlikely they would have believed it.
In fact, months after they all knew 45-year-old David Ogundele, an engineer, who was deeply obsessed with 30-year-old Oluwatosin, they had no idea they had a killer on their hands.
But it is late to regret; Oluwatosin is dead after being stabbed multiple times by Ogundele along with her mother, who was trying to ward off the attack on her daughter in a flat she rented at Tanke area of Ilorin, Kwara State.
As of the time of filing this report, Oluwatosin’s mother was still in intensive care at  a hospital in Ilorin where she had undergone a round of surgery to repair the extensive damage caused by the knife attack on her body.
In fact, one of Oluwatosin’s brothers, told our correspondent that their mother was stabbed more than his sister but she survived to tell the story.
For her sister, the story is grimmer. She had bled to death by the time help came.
Agony of love unreciprocated
The story that culminated in the tragedy that has befallen the Ashinwo family started late last year, Saturday PUNCH learnt.
Oluwatosin, who was a customer care executive with telecommunication company, MTN, had just been transferred from Kano to Kwara State when she met Ogundele.
Our correspondent was told that while Ogundele had a massive crush on the young woman, she had other things on her mind.
“My sister did not love him back and she did not hide it. He did everything to win her love but she just did not like him back,”  one of Oluwatosin’s brothers told our correspondent.
Soon, Ogundele was said to have reached out to the young woman’s siblings with the hope of winning their approval and convincing their sister.
Oluwatosin’s brother said, “At a time when I was in Ilorin at the end of last year, I visited my sister one evening when the man came around. I saw him a second time, two weeks after that in December. I did not ask my sister about him because I knew she was old enough to handle her affairs. But it was clear my sister did not like him.
“My sister used to tell me that he works at Omu Aran. She said the man would always pester her that he wanted to marry her.
“There had been pressure from my mother and other family members for her to get married but she always liked to handle her issues herself. She was the one who sponsored my university education. She was very hardworking. Even apart from her MTN work, she was still selling shoes and bags on the side.
“It happened that the man (Ogundele) got the numbers of my brother and I somehow.”
Soon, Ogundele started to send messages to Oluwatosin’s brothers.
The screen capture of one of such messages shown our correspondent, reads, “Your sister is giving me a serious headache. I don’t know what to do. I love her so much but…Join me in prayers that God should soften her heart.”
In another text message he sent to one of the brothers, Ogundele wrote, “I am at the health centre now. It is your sister’s behaviour that landed me there o. Always thinking (sic) I covet your prayers for survival. If I die, I die for love. You can’t understand.”
At this point, the brothers reached the conclusion that the man was terribly obsessed with their sister, who insisted that she was never going to get into a relationship with or marry him.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that it became clear that Oluwatosin’s mind was made up when Ogundele undertook the most unexpected and shocking step of organising a big birthday  party for the young woman when she clocked 30 in February.
Apart from organising the birthday, he bought a Toyota Matrix as a birthday gift.
As the birthday ceremony started, Ogundele reportedly put a call across to Oluwatosin to come. She never showed up.
“If my sister had accepted the gift, it would have been the same as accepting his proposal. He felt so bad about it,” the deceased’s brother said.
This was said to have infuriated Ogundele, whom they said felt ashamed in the eyes of the guests he had invited to the party.
Oluwatosin’s brothers said her resolve was more affirmed because she had learnt that Ogundele was married already.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that after Ogundele established contacts with Oluwatosin’s siblings, he went ahead to get in touch with their mother too.
“He kept disturbing my brother. My brother initially felt pity for him for the disappointment when he told him he bought a car for my sister but she still disappointed him. When he got my mother’s number, I explained to my mother that he was not the kind of person my sister could marry. My mother decided to tell him that there was nothing she could do about that because she could not force a man on her own daughter to marry.”
On Saturday, their 53-year-old mother travelled to Ilorin to visit Oluwatosin.
That was when she learnt that there had been an incident recently which Oluwatosin did not tell them.
“I called my mother that day and she told me that she was happy that she visited my sister. She said the man (Ogundele) threatened my sister. My mother said my sister told her that the man held a knife to her neck and collected her ATM card and withdrew money from her account.
“My sister told mom that the man threatened that if he did not marry her, he would waste her. We could not finish that conversation that day.”
Then between 8am and 9am on Sunday, the Ashinwo’s worst nightmare came true. Ogundele made good his threat.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that Ogundele showed up and an argument ensued, during which Oluwatosin insisted the man must leave her house.
But rather than leave, in anger, he ran into the kitchen and grabbed a knife.
By the time, he was done, the two women, Oluwatosin, and her mother, who tried to stop the fight, had both been stabbed multiple times.
It was learnt that Ogundele locked his victims in the room, thinking that they were both dead.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the house was deserted at the time as other tenants were not around.
But unknown to him, Oluwatosin’s mother survived and she alerted a trader who had a shop in front of the compound.
The severely injured woman, who had managed to narrate a little of what happened, said she watched as her bleeding daughter breathed her last, as Ogundele locked them inside and fled.
She was later rushed to the hospital where doctors performed an emergency surgery to save her life.
Photographs of the scene of the attack, which were shown our correspondent, showed patches of thickened blood which had turned the white tiles red. The photographs gave an insight into the brutal attack that took Oluwatosin’s life.

Conversation with killer on the run
In a shocking conversation our correspondent struck with the alleged killer (Ogundele) on WhatsApp, he simply rationalised his act by saying “I was bewitched.”
Asked if Oluwatosin provoked him, he said, “It is well.  What can I do now? I was bewitched. How would I attack a lady I claim to love?”
At what point did he think he was bewitched?
“When you did something you never wanted to do that’s how you’ll know. Tell me what to do please,” he said.
Asked what caused the argument in which he stabbed Oluwatosin and her mother, he answered “Please, tell me what to do.”
Our correspondent told him that if he refused to explain what happened, people would read the report and view him simply as a cold-blooded killer, he answered, “At least I will appear in one of the most read newspapers in Nigeria.”
Asked why he did not simply hand himself over to the police, rather than run, he said, “I am in Ilorin, airport area. I am not running.”
He was asked why he stabbed Oluwatosin’s mother too, he denied it and simply said, “Never”. When told that the woman survived, he said, “Thank God for her life.”
When he was told that the more he stayed in hiding, the more he would look guilty, he replied, “Now you are talking.  Is she really dead? Okay. I will hand myself over to the police tomorrow in Ilorin, trust me. She is dead, let me die too.”
Our correspondent later sent him one of his pictures earlier taken from his Whatsapp profile to let him know that his identity was known.
“That’s not my present picture though. I keep an afro now. Long hair. Where are you now?” Ogundele said.
He later signed off the conversation and said, “Talk to you later.”
Hunt for killer
The case was initially reported at the F Division of the Kwara State Police Command, which is located few metres away from where Oluwatosin lived.
The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed that the police are on the trail of the suspect.
Investigators have visited a private university where Ogundele is said to work, but his colleagues said they had not seen nor heard from him since the day before the incident.
The police have called for any information that may help to track down the suspect as he continues to stay in hiding.
As of the time of filing this report, he had yet to hand himself over to the police as he promised our correspondent.
