SSS Raids CCB Chairman's Residence In Abuja [DETAILS]

Operatives of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) on Sunday morning invaded the Abuja home of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Mr. Sam Saba, sources said.

Although officials of the DSS were not forthcoming on the incident last night, credible sources said that the operatives stormed the Aso Drive, Abuja residence of Saba in the early hours of Sunday.
It was gathered that DSS operatives conducted a thorough search on Saba’s home and the action may not be unconnected with allegations that funds meant for the completion of the CCB permanent head office were diverted under his leadership.

According to The AUTHORITY, the DSS action was also linked to petitions from several quarters against the management style adopted by Saba and the CCB Board.

When The AUTHORITY contacted the Special Assistant to the CCB Chairman, Mr. S.P. Gwimi, on the said invasion of Saba’s home, he said he was not aware of it because he had been out of Abuja.

Gwimi, who said that he was just entering the Federal Capital Territory, asked that we call back after an hour. But when a call was put to his phone after an hour, Gwimi did not pick the call. He also declined to respond to a text message sent to him.

Before the DSS’ search, Saba had been having a running battle with some top personnel of the bureau over the way he reportedly runs the affairs of the CCB.
Recently, a top official, who was sacked a year ago by the board on alleged corruption charges, petitioned the bureau over the termination of his appointment.

In the petition, the official had claimed that Mr. Saba, in collaboration with his board members, allocated to themselves roles meant for core officials of the bureau – in attempts to pervert the course of justice.

Other aggrieved stakeholders within and outside the CCB have also accused Saba of diverting funds meant for the building of a permanent secretariat for the agency. CCB still operates from a section of the building located in the complex housing the office of the Head of Service of the Federation (HoSF).

The CCB handles cases of politicians and public servants with false declaration of assets.

Source said it was due to the lack of transparency in the CCB that the EFCC took over the prosecution of the embattled senate president, Bukola Saraki who is now standing trial at the CCT.

Teenager kills landlady, daughter, grandchildren, reports to police

An 18-year-old man, identified simply as Sunday, is currently in the police custody in Abuja after he allegedly killed his parents’ landlady, identified only as Mama Moses.
The suspect was also accused of killing the landlady’s daughter and her three grandchildren.
It was gathered that the suspect, who lived with his parents in the landlady’s residence at Tudun-Fulani, in the Bwari area of the Federal Capital Territory, reported himself to the police after committing the crime.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Sunday locked the deceased in their apartment after they had slept in the night, sprayed the house with petrol and set it ablaze afterwards.
It was said that Sunday watched as the fire raged on and when he was sure that the victims were trapped, he headed for the Bwari Police Division.
The inferno reportedly lasted for hours before residents were able to put it out.
Charred remains of the five victims were eventually removed from the razed apartment and deposited in a morgue by the police.
Our correspondent gathered that Sunday’s mother had fled from the community.
Prior to the incident, which happened on Thursday, April 14, our correspondent learnt that there was a disagreement between the suspect and the landlady’s family members. He reportedly threatened to deal with them.
It was learnt that there was a relationship between the landlady’s daughter and Sunday, which broke recently.
The boy was said to have kept the family at arm’s length following the collapse of the relationship.
A police source told our correspondent that he and his colleagues were shocked when the suspect came to the station to report the matter.
He said, “Last Thursday, after the family members had gone to bed, the suspect locked their apartment’s door from outside, drenched the building with fuel and set the house ablaze. By the time the police got there, they had been burnt beyond recognition.
“I was told that he and the landlady’s daughter were dating each other until recently when their relationship turned sour. He had been transferred to another division for further investigation.”
A social media user posted on Nairaland.com that the incident happened not far from his residence in Sabon-Gari.
He said, “The incident started at about 11pm. There was confusion in the community. It was difficult for people to rescue the family because the fire was much.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in Abuja, ASP Anjuguri Manzah, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro, saying that the commissioner of police, FCT, had directed that the suspect be transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
The PPRO added that Sunday would be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
He said, “Five persons were burnt to death in the incident; it was unfortunate. The CP has directed that the suspect should be transferred to the homicide section of CIID. Investigation is still ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court after the investigation. The corpses have been deposited in a mortuary.”

EDUCATION TAX: Ekiti govt, Catholic Bishop bicker

As Ajimobi gives condition for return of mission schools
FOLLOWING a threat by the Catholic Church of Ekiti Diocese to seek legal redress over education levy, the Ekiti State government says there is no going back on the N1, 000 and N500 levy being paid by private and public primary and secondary schools respectively in the state.
This was as Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi has promised to hand over mission schools to owners who have genuine proposal for the development of such schools and proven commitment to education.
The Ekiti State government maintained that mission schools in the state will not be given preferential treatment over other schools and that “no other body apart from the Federal and state government has power to make policies concerning both private and public schools in the country.”
The Catholic Diocese of Ekiti had last week threatened to drag the state government to court over the development levy, saying “no law empowers the state government to impose educational development levy on pupils of mission schools.”
The government argued that “it is wrong for any organisation to claim that it has its own education policy that is different from that of the state.”
Reacting to the development, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ekiti, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, said “when I heard of it, I asked the schools concerned to refund the money collected to their parents” adding “We shall meet in court.”
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Jide Egunjobi, in a statement, disclosed that seven schools owned by the Catholic Diocese of Ekiti State had already  paid the development levy, dismissing the threat to sue the government by the Catholic Diocese.
 Ajimobi gives condition
Relatedly,Governor Ajimobi stressed that any religious body or organization without a questionable intention would be allowed to run such schools inasmuch as they met government’s requirements.
The governor made the promise in his address at the archdiocesan reception for the 34th council of Bishops at the Bishop Ayo Ladigbolu House, Molete, Ibadan, on Saturday, which was attended by bishops and archbishops of the Methodist Church across the country.

2019: ‘PDP needs reforms to get back to winning ways’

PDP Special National Convention: Delegates casting their votes at 2013 PDP Special National Convention . Photo by Gbemiga Olamikan.Members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the North and South, which converged under the umbrella of PDP Reform Group, PDPRG, have urged the leadership of the party to embrace reforms, particularly, in respect of its constitutions, zoning principles and adopted recommendations of the party.

‎The PDPRG, in a statement on Monday, by its spokesperson Okai Usman, said: “As we set out for a Post-Defeat Convention to restructure and reposition the party back to winning ways, we wish to bring to the knowledge and information of stakeholders, the dangers of mismanaging the opportunity availed us by the dismal and retrogressive performance of the current APC-led government. This is a chance that has come earlier than expected, but whether we are going to do the needful by seizing the moment is another thing.
‎”We are appalled that some of our leaders are still driven by excessive ambition for power, personal gain and greed, and not necessarily to serve the greater good of party members nationwide. It is a serious concern to party members across the country that some of our leaders are yet to learn from the mistakes of the past.
‎”Therefore rising from our inaugural meeting, we resolve as follows: The full implementation of Ekweremadu Post Election Party Review Committee’s recommendations as adopted by the NEC of the PDP; the adoption of proposals by the Constitutional Review Committee, as well as enforcing the communique issued at the last PDP National Conference held at Thisdays Dome Abuja .
‎”It is pertinent to note that if the existing zoning arrangements are altered for whatever political exigency, we warn that it would be difficult for the zoning of the Presidency to the North as recommended by the Ekweremadu-committee to be respected when the time comes. We fear that the Northeast will be the greatest loser for 2019 – This comes as a very strong position of the Reform Group.‎
‎”We also recommend a complete overhaul of the PDP National Working Committee to inject New Ideas, New Vision and New Hands that will pilot our party to greatness. The general perception of the outgoing NWC is less than palatable and the only honourable path is for everyone of them to quit and allow fresh blood to come in on May 21, 2016.
‎”We also Strongly recommend and Implore young party men and women to go back to their various wards and local governments and states to participate actively in the forthcoming congresses because all politics is local. We urge you to get elected into various offices and as delegates to the National Convention. The future of the party is in your hands.
‎”We thank the PDP Governors forum led by Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the National Assembly caucus for ensuring that the zoning committee stayed action on its announcement of the Zonings to allow for further deliberation and more consultation in the interest of peace and future of the party.‎”
‎The statement added that, “Nigerians are now eager to quickly have an alternative to the APC. Sadly, the APC is an experiment that has gone awry and may never recover from this doldrum. However, the opportunity to quickly bounce back must not be taken for granted. As a party, we must put our house in order and presenting the best to have the best from Nigerians.”
