Woman with TWO vaginas and TWO cervixes becomes a mother after six miscarriages

Woman with TWO vaginas and TWO cervixes becomes a mother after six miscarriages - by conceiving two 'miracle' children in separate wombs

  • Faye Wilkins, from Plymouth, was diagnosed with uterus didelphys at 14
  • The rare condition means she has 2 vaginas, 2 cervixes and 2 wombs
  • Doctors warned the 32 year-old that her chances of motherhood were low
  • 'Miracle' children Molly, 7, and George, 2, were born in 2009 and 2014

A mother born with two sets of reproductive organs has spoken about how her two children were conceived in separate wombs.
Faye Wilkins, 31, from Plymouth, was diagnosed with a rare condition called uterus didelphys - causing her to have two sets of reproductive organs.
Doctors warned Faye that her chances of carrying a baby to full term was minimal but miraculously, after six miscarriages, she went on to have two children - one in each womb.

Faye Wilkins, 31, from Plymouth, was diagnosed with a rare condition called uterus didelphys - causing her to have two sets of reproductive organs, but now has two 'miracle' children, Molly, 7, and George, 2
After giving birth to two healthy babies, Molly, seven and George, two, Ms Wilkins is now sharing her story to raise awareness about the condition.
Ms Wilkins, a healthcare assistant, said: 'At the age of 14 I couldn’t believe it when doctors told me I was born with two vaginas, two cervixes and two wombs.
'I was in complete shock as I’d never noticed the condition before as the differences were only internal.

All my friends had started their periods but I was only suffering from stomach cramps but nothing else.
'As the pain got worse my mum, Polly, took me to the doctors thinking I had an ovarian cyst because a lump had formed but no-one would scan me.
'At least eight months later and multiple visits to my GP, my uterus ruptured when I went to the toilet and I heard a huge pop and knew something inside me had exploded.
'I was in agony, there was so much blood and I rushed to hospital where doctors examined me and finally diagnosed me with UD.
'The condition had caused a blockage and my menstrual blood to build up, which had reached 12cm in size.

'Within two months I had surgery to make my two vaginas into one to prevent my uterus rupturing again. I was warned after my diagnosis that it would be difficult to conceive due to reproductive organs being half the size they should be, making implantation harder.
'Thankfully though I have my two little miracles now and I’m just so pleased they were born healthy.'

WHAT IS UTERUS DIDELPHYS?

Uterus didelphys, also known as a double uterus, is a condition where a woman is born with two uterus, to separate cervixes and sometimes two vaginas, though this is not always the case.
It occurs because in a female foetus, the uterus starts out as two small tubes.
As the foetus develops, the tubes normally join to create one larger, hollow organ — the uterus.
Sometimes the tubes don't join completely and each one develops into a separate hollow organ so the woman is born with two wombs.
It often only becomes noticeable after puberty and is diagnosed with a physical exam or an ultrasound scan.
In terms of physical anatomy, the two wombs are often slightly smaller than average in order to fit, though they can be as big as a 'normal' womb.

It also makes it possible to be pregnant twice at the same time - with a baby in each womb.
Some women are also born with two vaginas, although they can have sex and menstruate in the same way as people with just one.
'They may know they have two and be able to find them, or they may not realise,' Dr Leila Hanna, a consultant gynaecologist & Obstetrician at BMI The Sloane Hospital, told MailOnline.
'It can be painful because there are two squashed in the same area, so sometimes we do an operation to join them together, but its not necessary.
'They could also have abnormalities of their kidneys and the tube which bring the urine from the bladder.'
Women will frequently have a slightly higher risk of late miscarriage, premature delivery and bleeding during pregnancy.
Often Caesarean sections are recommended, to reduce the risk of complications.
There is no treatment or cure for the condition.
As well as uterus didelphys causing recurrent miscarriages it can also in extremely rare cases cause a woman to fall pregnant in both wombs at the same time - both babies can then be delivered days apart.
After suffering from five miscarriages, Ms Wilkins detached herself from the idea of motherhood.
But then finally during her sixth pregnancy in 2008 she was over the moon when she surpassed the 12-week mark.
After learning she was carrying the baby in her left womb, Ms Wilkins went on to have a cervical stitch to help prevent Molly being born too prematurely.
Five years later, after another miscarriage, she went on to have George, who developed in her right womb, with her now partner, Lee Welch, 37.
Ms Wilkins said: 'Unlike most mums, falling pregnant was actually a difficult time for me and I learnt to not even celebrate the news.
'Doctors had warned me it would be difficult to conceive and after the first miscarriage I didn’t allow myself to get excited.
'With Molly I had a cervical stitch to stop her being born too prematurely as my womb is split in half its half the size, meaning it’s much weaker.
'Thankfully she was a little fighter and she held on for as long as she could before being delivered by a C-section seven weeks and two days early.
'I split from her father during the pregnancy as we wanted different things but I was overwhelmed when the doctor placed her in my arms, I was so happy, I was finally a mum.
'Then, after meeting Lee, we decided we wanted another child, but I miscarried again before falling pregnant with George.
'This time I was given steroids to speed up George’s growth so when he was born seven weeks and two days early again he was stronger than Molly meaning he was out of neonatal care sooner.'
Despite having the unusual condition, Ms Wilkins has never been embarrassed to talk about it and is now trying to raise awareness so other women aren’t ashamed.
She said: 'I’ve always been upfront and honest with men I’ve dated, I wanted them to know that I may never fall pregnant and uterus didelphys is just a part of who I am.
'Having UD doesn’t make you any less of a woman, your internal organs have just formed slightly differently.
'I’ve gone on to lead a relatively normal life, I only have one kidney too which is related to the condition but again I haven’t let this hold me back.
'I want to raise awareness as many medical professionals are unaware of the condition and every time I go for a smear it always amazes me how little people know, and how many weird questions I get asked.
'I don’t have plans for any more children, I already have two beautiful kids and couldn’t be happier - I’m the luckiest woman in the world.'
Professor Keith Edmonds a Consultant Gynaecologist at the Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London, said: 'Uterus didelphys is a rare condition when the two parts that make the uterus and vagina develop separately.
'There are therefore two half uteruses and two half vaginas in UD and it is even rarer to have one vagina obstructed.
'Surgery to unite the two vaginas to form one is often necessary and the results are very successful.
'It is not a dangerous condition but the expertise to perform some of the surgery is limited so any patient with this condition should seek expert advice.
'There is no place for trying to unite the two half wombs as they function perfectly well as they are.
'Pregnancy is more than possible and pregnancies may occur in either side or for some women only on one side.'

Men and women revealed what they wished the other sex knew about them

'You CAN make the first move': Men reveal the things they wish women knew (and the ladies hit back by turning the question around)

  • Men and women revealed what they wished the other sex knew about them
  • Surprising confessions came from both sides of the gender divide
  • Threads on Reddit attracted thousands of comments each on the topic

Men have taken to Reddit to reveal things about their lives that they wished women knew.
Under the post 'What aspects of a man's life are most women unaware of?' thousands posted comments - including wanting to be told more often that they're handsome.
However, it wasn't long before women hit back with a similar thread, to let men know about the aspects of their lives that leave men clueless.

Touching and surprising confessions came from both sides of the gender divide on the two Reddit threads, which attracted thousands of comments each.
One male Reddit user wanted to make it clear to the ladies in his life that he was fair game, if anyone found themselves interested.
Plap11 wrote: 'Some of us really wouldn't mind if you made the first move.'
Others spoke about the loneliness that men feel, due to social expectations that make them feel they can't be vulnerable enough to discuss their feelings.
Tqqp said he wished women would know, 'how utterly socially alone we are sometimes. Most women seem to have many friends that they could call on in a second to provide deep emotional support.

'No guy friend has ever put their arm around me and told me it's going to be OK. I don't know any man I could cry to or just be with if I'm feeling down and desperate.'
Other comments were far less emotional.
Yousefsquared said: 'If I'm alone in my room, I'll have my hands in my pants. I don't even have a reason, it's not naughty or dirty in any way, it doesn't even feel good. I just do it.'
Genitals were a common theme in the men's thread.
ChiefGamken added: 'There is an outstanding chance that a guy has spoken directly to your face with a random boner.... just tucked up into the waistband, half an inch of cloth away from poking out and smiling at you.'
For the majority of the time, however, the men in their thread were determined to talk about issues to do with their innermost feelings, including issues with gender stereotyping.
Women spoke out about sexual harassment, claiming they wished men could understand the threat

Lolrolfpwnt said: 'Gender stereotypes exist for us. I'm a stay-at-home dad. I've been called terrible things all because I don't work like a man should.
'This happens even though I also collect VA disability because of injuries sustained while in the USMC. I've been told I'm not a good role model for my son. Called a degenerate, even though I'm a college graduate. I've even been told im not a real man. It's really really depressing.'
JosephND expressed that felt sad at never feeling truly sexually desired. He said: 'As men, we also want to feel sexually wanted too.
'I had an ex that was horrible, she'd complain about me not making it apparent enough and then she'd complain about me making it too apparent. She'd hate if I was too spontaneous but would then accuse me of being too predictable.
'Meanwhile, she only twice ever told me I was sexy or that she really wanted me... And that was in the first month only. After a while it was only ever me pursuing her, and her not even bothering to care about pursuing me.'

Another, Dgrace97, spoke about the pressures that come from, 'The requirement to be established. Have an established job, have a house, to be independent.'
One more highlighted the fact that as a man he is more likely to be mistaken for a pedophile. He said: Sta1994: 'When I (a white guy) take my (black) nephews to the park, I get looks from women that are the "He is a sexual predator". I've had police come up to me twice because women thought I was there planning on stealing someone's kid even though I was there with my nephews.'
Over on the women's thread conversation was kicking off over a little understood aspect of women's lives, and one most seemed to unanimous agree no men fully understood, menstruation.
Thelaughingpear wrote: 'Almost every woman panics over being pregnant if her period is late one month, even if she is a virgin or hasn't been laid in years.'
Sometimes we honestly aren't trying to lead guys on
Wavinsnail added: 'How debilitating periods can be (...) I've had days where I physically couldn't get out of bed because of hormonal migraines.'
Other women spoke out about dealing with sexual harassment, claiming they wished men could understand the threat more easily.
Purritocat wrote: 'Having to second-guess every guy's intentions. And before I get any 'not all men's, that's the point. You just don't know who is going to try and get into your pants and get more aggressive and violent when you decline.'
Dontbothertoknock carried on along a similar vein.
She wrote: 'We aren't making up the harassment. I'm not particularly attractive, but I've had guys hitting on me and harassing me since I was 12.
So, of course I'm going to walk a little faster when I'm alone in the dark. Non one likes when I guy sticks their hand up your skirt or says you probably taste good or says you should smile more.'
Others complained about how much effort women are expected to put into their appearance, in comparison to men.
'I consistently see men praising how beautiful Kim Kardashian looks "without make-up" when she's straight up wearing 20+ products - 99 per cent of "no make-up" looks take more products to pull off than super dramatic make-up looks do.'
Outwards appearances concerned the female posters a lot.
Closetklepto wrote: 'As a normal, feminine woman who is married with kids, it is constantly assumed that i am some hapless housewife who is just taken care of by my husband. Well f*** all of you. I'm the one doing all the research, doing the taxes, getting us into real estate investing etc.'
It was male and female relationships taking most of the topic of discussion, however.
Helpmycorgi wrote: 'It's kind of hurtful when you only want to be friends because you're interested in us/attracted to us. There's this whole awful, isolating barrier if we're already in a relationship. Or if, God forbid, we're just not interested in you in that way.'
And Lunasolaris said: 'Sometimes we honestly aren't trying to lead guys on.'
