Aso Rock: The strong men behind Buhari

As one who presides over the most populous country in Africa, President Muhammadu Buhari is no doubt an influential man. It is not out of place that millions of people within and outside the country might want to get his attention for one favour or the other. Expectedly, not many people will get that needed access to him.
There are, however, a few individuals who are very close to the President and, hence, wield huge influence in their own rights. These are apart from members of his immediate family that consists of the First Lady (sorry, the President’s wife), Hajia Aisha Buhari, and the children.
As far as the Buhari Presidency is concerned, one of the men that can be said to be very close to the President so far is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who currently supervises the nation’s economy. Osinbajo is always at the service of the President. He represents him very often both within and outside the country. The relationship between the two top government officials so far is very cordial. In fact, I don’t think Osinbajo’s loyalty to the President is to be questioned.
Another man that is very close to the President is his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari. The closeness may be due to the position he currently occupies, but the lesson must not be lost that something must have qualified him for that appointment.
Since his assumption of office, Kyari, who has a trademark of always wearing white ‘agbada’ and wine cap, has not been far from the President. He is in charge of arranging the President’s day-to-day activities. Despite that Kyari’s office is a bit far from the President’s (about 200metres), the COS can trek that distance to and fro more than six times in a day either to consult with Buhari or attend one meeting or the other.
While making his way to the President’s office or back to his office, he will pass through the corridor of the Briefing Room, where journalists always hang out to search for scoops. No matter how busy he is, he will pause a bit to crack jokes with the reporters and quickly leave as fast as possible. Kyari is no doubt one of the President’s men. There is no way those who wield influence in the Villa for now will be identified without mentioning Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State. I can even state without fear of contradiction that he is so far the most frequent state governor in the Villa. If he is not visiting the President, El-Rufai will be consulting with Vice President Osinbajo. I am aware that he was instrumental to some of the appointments so far made by the President. He wields big influence that is not commensurate to his small stature.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State also wields enormous influence in the Villa. He is also a regular visitor, coming closely behind El-Rufai. Most times, after consulting with Buhari, Oshiomhole will brief State House correspondents. His interviews had always been focusing on how officials of the last administration allegedly stole the nation blind.
I will be identifying more President’s men in subsequent editions.
Like Mobola Johnson, like Kemi Adeosun
Since the wind of change that blew through the Villa during the last presidential election, many other things have changed. The change permeated through the seat of power from who occupies the President’s seat to ministers and even Villa guests. The hitherto known faces have given way for the new ones.
By the time Buhari inaugurated his cabinet, most of his 36 ministers are those who are entering the Villa for the first time. A few of them who had been here before had either done so because of the public offices they occupied before or because they belonged to the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party before they parted ways with others under that green-white-red umbrella.
There is, however, someone in the present cabinet that keeps reminding us of one of the ministers that served under former President Goodluck Jonathan. That person is the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun. She keeps reminding us of Jonathan’s Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson.
Both ladies look alike in stature, and also in the way they walk and talk (with foreign accent). Incidentally, both of them are Yoruba ladies, though from different states. While Johnson is from Ondo State, Adeosun is from Ogun State.
Unlike her predecessor in office, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, whose trademark is her headgear that she places delicately on her head as if it will fall down with a slight push, Adeosun rarely tie headgears. In fact, I heard her telling one of her female colleagues recently that she resorted to holding her headgear after many failed attempts to tie it correctly. The female minister collected the headgear from her, carefully folded it and placed it on her (Adeosun’s ) shoulder. Those who specialise in tying headgears for fees may find a good business in her.
Adeosun has, however, created her own trademark. She has been appearing, most times, in ‘adire,’ a tye-and-die traditional clothe that is popular in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital. With different colours and designs, her tailor has been cutting the material neatly into skirts and blouses or gowns for her. Those who have business sense can also explore the idea of supplying her with the materials.
Since their inauguration, Adeosun had the first opportunity to address State House correspondents on Tuesday, albeit, briefly. It was at the press conference addressed by the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, shortly after a closed-door meeting she had with Buhari. The lot fell on Adeosun to introduce Lagarde to journalists at the Briefing Room of the Council Chamber.
The following day, however, she had more time to spend with reporters. She had the opportunity of briefing journalists of the outcome of the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Buhari. The venue was the same. She was introduced by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
Unlike his predecessors who will first speak at length on what transpired at such meetings before yielding the stage for relevant ministers to brief, Mohammed does not waste time. He will just introduce the ministers concerned and step aside for them to carry their cross. That style, to me, is good. It simply avoids repetition.
Since the main item on the agenda of the FEC meeting was how to plug leakages in government revenue, all the questions raised by journalists during the post-FEC briefing, except one, were directed at Adeosun. The minister gave a good account of herself to the extent that her performance became a subject of discussion among journalists long after the session ended. Some also mimicked her foreign accent.
As she was making her way out of the Briefing Room with Mohammed, I approached her to tell her how impressed I was with her performance, especially bearing in mind that she is my state’s representative in the cabinet. After appreciating the compliment, she sought to know the part of the state that I hail from. She informed me amidst smile that she is from Ogun Water Side. Enjoy your weekend.

We’re prepared for re-run in Rivers – Peterside

THE governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 general election, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has said that his party was ready for the rerun of elections annulled by the Appeal Court.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared that it was making arrangements to conduct 78 rerun elections in some parts of the country.
However, 38 out of the 78 reruns will hold in Rivers State as the Appeal Court had nullified some House of Assembly and National Assembly elections held in the state in 2015.
Specifically, the court had ordered that fresh elections should be conducted to determine who would occupy the 24 seats in State House of Assembly, 12 seats in the Federal House of Representatives.
Other areas where fresh elections would be conducted are three senatorial seats in the state.

Student bags first class after 17 carry-overs in previous course

The Internet was abuzz on Saturday after the story of a student, Hillary Agbo-Odeh, who graduated with flying colours against all the odds, went viral.
According to an online medium, Idoma Voice, 30-year-old Agbo-Odeh completed his Psychology programme in Benue State University with a first-class degree after no less than 17 failed courses as an undergraduate.
The Idoma native reportedly completed his secondary education in 2003 before applying for a pre-degree programme at BSU in 2005 with the hope of studying Medicine and Surgery.
Though Agbo-Odeh was said to have emerged as one of the best in the remedial programme that year, he was offered admission to study Physics instead.
It said, “In frustration, he took the plunge and settled with the Physics (programme) he was offered with little interest in the course. He struggled with the course due to lack of interest. It wasn’t surprising at all that he could not cope with studies as frustration and depression set in his academic pursuit.
“Agbo-Odeh was at his lowest ebb in his final year when his 300-level result was published. He was at the bottom of his class crawling with 17 carry-overs; he was placed on probation by the school authority. He became the subject of mockery in the school among his colleagues.
“Hilary came to a decision point: ‘Why stay here and be withdrawn?’ He told himself the hard truth, it was time to move forward regardless of the storms.”
The online medium added that Agbo-Odeh then picked a new form for the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board Exams and applied for Psychology, which he considered to be closely related to Medicine.
“By the second semester of his final year (as a Physics student), the JAMB admission (list) was out and he was admitted to study Psychology. Hence, he withdrew from the Physics Department and started a fresh academic journey in the department of Psychology.
“The young resilient Idoma boy from Ohimini, the worst student in Physics, with 17 carry-overs to his name, would graduate from the Psychology Department of the same university with a cumulative grade point average of 4.57.
“His outstanding performance broke many records in the university, including the pioneer first class in the Psychology Department since the university’s inception in 1992. He also became the overall best graduating student of the 14th and 15th combined convocation of BSU held on January 17, 2015. His exploits came with several rewards, he bagged seven academic awards including the Tony and Awele Elumelu Prize for Excellence.”

Pope says he’s ‘a sinner in need of God’s mercy

Pope Francis describes himself as “a sinner” in need of God’s mercy, in an upcoming book where he also urges the Catholic Church to focus on its mission as a grassroots, hands-on organisation.

The first book of his papacy, “The Name of God is Mercy,” published on Tuesday in 86 countries, comprises a series of interviews, some of them highly personal, with the 79-year-old Argentine-born pope.
In extracts from the French-language edition provided to AFP by the French publisher Laffont, the pope calls himself “a man who is in need of God’s mercy.”
Expounding on the notion of forgiveness, the pope — a frequent visitor to prisons — refers to his “special relationship” with convicts.
“I have always been very much attached to them, precisely because of the awareness that I have of being a sinner,” Francis says, according to AFP’s translation of the extracts.
“Every time I cross the doorway of a prison, I always ask myself, ‘Why are they are here, and not me?’ I should be here, I should deserve to be here. Their fall could have been mine. I don’t feel superior to those in front of me.”
The pope, interviewed by veteran Vatican reporter Andrea Tornielli, talks of the power of “shame,” describing it as guidance from God for providing a moral path.
“Shame is a grace: When we feel God’s mercy, we really are ashamed of ourselves. Despite all our past of wretchedness and sin, God remains faithful to us and raises us up.”
Turning to the jubilee year he launched on December 8, whose theme is divine mercy, the pope says, “The church condemns sin, because it has to tell the truth: this is a sin. But at the same time, it embraces the sinner who acknowledges what he is.”
“I hope that the jubilee will show the face of a Church which is rediscovering the womb of mercy,” Francis added.
“A Church that goes out into the world… a field hospital whose characteristic is to spring up wherever there’s fighting. Not some elaborate structure, kitted out with everything… (but) a mobile structure, for saving (people), for fast intervention.”

Cardinal Okogie Blasts At Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor

Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, has lashed out at the current president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor over his alleged disgraceful relationship with ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan.
Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie
Cardinal Okogie took a swipe at the popular Warri based pastor, in an interview with Premium Times. He said it was shameful that Ortitsejafor decided to abandon his office as a man of God for politics.

Okogie said: “My brother, I must tell you this; CAN leadership today is zero. CAN has no leader.”
“Thank God you are talking to one of the founders of CAN, and I was there as their leader for eight years. Then, the whole country knew that CAN had a leader, not by my own might, but by God. Because what we were doing then, we had only one voice. But the problem we have now is that people are struggling for power in unrighteous way. And because he is struggling for power, he can do little or nothing.
“And we didn’t buy the position. But this time around, because they are rushing to be in power, nobody obeys them. And look at how they are making mockery of themselves and making mockery of ‘religion’. Is that religion? Today, they are with the federal government. We saw the writing on the wall when we left. The very first person that took over started romancing with Obasanjo. Then one or two CAN presidents tried their best before it got to this present CAN president, Oritsejafor. This is not right. Look at how Oritsejafor has fallen, from grace to grass,” Okogie said.

He also condemned Oritsejafor over his link with the $9.3 million smuggled abroad purportedly to procure arms and seized by South African authorities.
“They are ready with their moneybags. Where did they get the money from? Where did they get the $9.3m that has been seized by South Africa from? They said it was to buy arms. We have to be very careful in this nation. What is the man (Oritsejafor) looking for? If you call yourself a man of God, then you should rely on God. Why should he be jumping up and down? But because he was not elected, not chosen by God, that is what is happening. Today, he wants to build a university, tomorrow he wants to be something else, next tomorrow he wants to be like other people.”

He said Oritsejafor is a sinking man and might take President Goodluck Jonathan down with him.
“And he is not going down alone; he is also staining the name of the Head of State. Of course, why not? If you eat with those with dirty hands, then you must be dirty,” he added.
In the same vein, Reverend Chris Okotie, the general overseer of Household of God church, has said that Oritsejafor deceived ex-Nigerian president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ). Okotie stressed that it was Oritsejafor’s fake prophesy that led to GEJ’s loss in the last presidential election.
Okotie made the disclosure during a sermon in his church in Lagos. He said the president of CAN falsely prophesied that Jonathan would win the election convincingly which was why Jonathan went along to contest in the election which he eventually lost to Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, following claims of fraud and misappropriation of funds, Pastor Oritsejafor has said that contrary to views that he squandered funds belonging to the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), he left N600m in the coffers of PFN and almost completed a secretariat for the association during his tenure in office.
